Learjet Crashes Near Mar-a-Lago, Killing All Nine Aboard in ‘Cataclysmic’ Fireball

A private jet plummeted from 35,000 feet into a Palm Beach neighborhood Sunday afternoon, killing all nine people on board after pilots reported severe weather conditions during a flight from Austin to the Bahamas.

Learjet Crashes Near Mar-a-Lago, Killing All Nine Aboard in 'Cataclysmic' Fireball

A devastating plane crash in Palm Beach, Florida has claimed the lives of all nine people aboard a private Learjet 60, according to U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, who confirmed the tragedy Sunday evening.

The aircraft, which had departed from Austin, Texas en route to the Bahamas, crashed into a busy roadway in a neighborhood near Cresthaven at 12:50 PM Eastern Time, erupting into what witnesses described as a massive fireball. The crash site is located not far from Mar-a-Lago, President Donald Trump’s private residence.

Rapid Descent After Weather Emergency

According to the Guardian, the Learjet had been cruising at 35,000 feet when pilots encountered severe weather conditions, reporting turbulence, icing, and precipitation. The crew requested permission to climb an additional 2,000 feet to escape the dangerous conditions.

Moments after that request, the situation turned catastrophic. Flight tracking data and air traffic control recordings reveal the plane entered a steep, accelerating dive — first plummeting at 10,000 feet per minute, then 20,000 feet per minute, and ultimately reaching 30,000 feet per minute. The descent pushed the aircraft beyond its design limits.

A pilot declared an emergency and issued distress calls as the plane banked sharply to the right before slamming into the ground. Social media footage captured the horrific moment of impact.

Governor Describes ‘Missile Going Down’

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis arrived at the scene and spoke with reporters, offering a stark description of the crash’s violence.

“It was a cataclysmic plane crash,” DeSantis said. “It looked like a missile going down and left a big crater on the side of the road.”

The governor’s characterization underscores the speed and force with which the aircraft struck the ground after its rapid descent from cruising altitude.

Poor Weather Conditions Reported

Weather conditions in the West Palm Beach area Sunday afternoon were notably poor, according to the Daily Mail. The region experienced overcast skies with rain and lightning, along with easterly winds of 15 mph gusting near 25 mph — conditions that likely contributed to the turbulence and icing the pilots reported before the crash.

It remains unclear whether any homes in the neighborhood sustained damage from the impact or resulting fireball, though the plane did crash into a busy roadway.

Federal Investigation Underway

Transportation Secretary Duffy announced that the Federal Aviation Administration is dispatching a team to support the National Transportation Safety Board’s investigation into the crash.

“Today’s plane crash in Palm Beach County, Florida is a horrific tragedy,” Duffy wrote on X. “Please join me in praying for the families and loved ones of those we lost.”

The NTSB investigation will likely focus on several key factors: the aircraft’s encounter with severe weather, the pilots’ decision-making regarding altitude changes, potential structural failures during the high-speed descent, and whether the plane experienced any mechanical issues before entering its fatal dive.

The Learjet 60, a midsize business jet manufactured by Bombardier, typically carries between six and eight passengers plus crew. The aircraft is designed for high-altitude flight and has been a popular choice for private aviation since its introduction in the 1990s.

Investigators will examine flight data recorders, air traffic control communications, weather reports, and maintenance records as they work to determine what caused the aircraft to lose control and plummet from cruising altitude. The speed of the descent — reaching 30,000 feet per minute — suggests either a catastrophic structural failure, complete loss of control, or both.

The crash represents one of the deadliest private aviation accidents in Florida in recent years, and the proximity to a busy roadway and residential area raises questions about how the situation did not result in additional casualties on the ground.

As federal investigators begin their work at the crash site, the families of the nine victims face the sudden and tragic loss of their loved ones, who were likely traveling for business or leisure to the Bahamas when disaster struck.
