Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) has begun soliciting campaign contributions off the federal raid on her Washington, D.C., residence, according to reporting by The Hill, which obtained a screenshot of the fundraising pitch through its partner network NewsNation.
The email, sent under the subject line “Stand with Ilhan Omar,” casts the investigation as a political attack and urges recipients to donate ahead of the midterm elections. “Donald Trump and DHS have opened a baseless, partisan investigation into Ilhan Omar, and she needs us by her side as they escalate their attacks,” the message reads. It closes by asking supporters to “[c]hip in whatever you can to make sure Ilhan can beat Trump and keep fighting for our progressive values in Congress.”
A Monday Morning Warrant
Agents with the Department of Homeland Security’s Homeland Security Investigations unit executed a warrant at Omar’s D.C. home on Monday, an action first reported by Breitbart News. The involvement of HSI, an arm of the department, suggested an immigration-related federal inquiry.
Administration officials have since characterized the matter as part of a longer-running examination of the congresswoman’s immigration history. Border Czar Tom Homan told reporters this week that the “investigation was ongoing for a while,” while declining to detail its focus. “There was a warrant executed this morning, so I’ll leave it at that,” Homan said, adding that questions about the specifics should be directed to Attorney General Todd Blanche or DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin.
Omar has rejected the premise of the probe, arguing that President Donald Trump is singling her out because of her left-wing politics rather than any evidence of wrongdoing — a framing her fundraising email repeats almost verbatim.
What Investigators Had to Show
The bar investigators cleared before searching the home is drawing scrutiny from former federal officials. Jonathan Fahey, a former acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, told the New York Post this week that obtaining a judicial warrant from a D.C. judge to search a sitting congresswoman’s residence was not a simple matter, and he described the approval as a sign that investigators presented “probable cause” that Omar committed immigration crimes.
A judicial warrant differs from the administrative warrants sometimes used in immigration enforcement, requiring a judge’s independent sign-off rather than an agency’s own determination. That distinction is central to how both sides are framing Monday’s search: the administration and its allies point to the warrant as evidence the inquiry is grounded in law, while Omar’s camp describes the same action as an escalation of political retribution.
A Midterm Money Play
Turning a federal search into a small-dollar appeal is a well-worn move in both parties, and Omar’s team appears to be betting that the raid will energize her national donor base rather than damage her standing in a deep-blue Minneapolis district. The email does not address the substance of the investigation or the immigration questions at its center, focusing instead on the identity of the investigators and the figure at the top of the administration.</n
The fundraising push also lands as the midterm cycle moves into its closing stretch, when campaigns typically look for moments that can drive online contributions. Whether the raid produces a surge for Omar — or becomes a liability in a race where she is already heavily favored — will not be clear until filings are public.
Breitbart News first reported the raid on Monday. The Hill subsequently reported the fundraising email based on a screenshot provided through NewsNation.
