Rep. Ilhan Omar has assembled a powerhouse legal team as she confronts multiple federal investigations, turning to two Washington attorneys with deep ties to the Democratic establishment and a history of defending party leaders against high-stakes legal challenges.
The Minnesota Democrat has retained Amy Jeffress and Joshua Matz, senior partners at Hecker Fink LLP, according to Fox News. The pair — whose hourly rates can range from $700 to $2,000 — first surfaced publicly in October when they authored a written response to the Department of Justice claiming Omar’s rights were violated during a search warrant execution at her home.
The legal representation comes as Omar faces at least two federal investigations: one examining potential immigration fraud and another scrutinizing discrepancies in the Somali-born lawmaker’s financial disclosures.
A Legal Dream Team With Democratic Pedigree
Both attorneys bring formidable credentials and a track record of representing powerful Democrats. Jeffress, a former federal prosecutor and 1992 Yale Law graduate, spent a decade with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, where she served as chief of the National Security Section and tried more than 40 cases.
Most notably, Jeffress represented then-President Joe Biden in a lawsuit earlier this year seeking to prevent the public disclosure of audio recordings between Biden and his ghostwriter. A court initially blocked the release of the tapes, which reportedly contained frequent memory lapses by Biden. The recordings were ultimately released after Biden’s attorneys withdrew their case.
Before joining Hecker Fink, Jeffress served as counsel to then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the Democrat-led January 6 committee during its two-year investigation into the Capitol riot. In that role, she represented the committee when it faced a lawsuit from Taylor Budowich, a Trump campaign spokesperson, after the panel subpoenaed his bank records.
Jeffress also defended former FBI attorney Lisa Page during congressional scrutiny into the bureau’s handling of the Russia investigation. Page, a key figure in what critics called the “Russiagate conspiracy theory,” later sued the DOJ for releasing her text messages with FBI colleague Peter Strzok.
Adding another layer to the story, Jeffress is married to U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper of Washington, D.C., who ruled it was illegal for the John F. Kennedy Performing Arts Center to add Trump’s name to the venue. President Trump has criticized Cooper as “highly conflicted” due to his marriage to Jeffress.
Matz’s Resume Includes Two Trump Impeachments
Joshua Matz, a Harvard Law graduate and former clerk for Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, brings his own impressive portfolio to Omar’s defense. According to his biography, “Joshua’s practice has long included a focus on democracy and elections.”
Matz served as counsel to House Democrats during both impeachment attempts against President Trump during his first term. He also argued before the Supreme Court representing Pennsylvania in defense of its election results certification.
Perhaps his highest-profile case came representing advice columnist E. Jean Carroll in two civil lawsuits against Trump related to his denial of her sexual assault allegations. While Trump was never criminally charged, a New York jury found him liable for defamation and sexual assault in 2019. A separate jury later awarded Carroll $83.3 million in damages for defamation stemming from Trump’s comments after the initial case.
Matz’s work has consistently aligned with progressive causes. He represented students, parents, and teachers opposing Florida’s parental rights law, which critics dubbed the “Don’t Say Gay” law, that restricted classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity. He also defended Democratic Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear against lawsuits over COVID-19 lockdowns and represented victims of the 2017 white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Omar Asks Supporters for Financial Help
The cost of such high-caliber legal representation isn’t lost on Omar herself. In an October video message posted on social media, the lawmaker thanked her supporters while asking them to continue sending donations, acknowledging that fighting the investigations would be expensive. She blamed the probes on President Donald Trump.
The investigations have taken new turns in recent days, according to reports from the New York Post and Breitbart News, with revelations that seriously question whether “Ilhan Omar” is even the lawmaker’s legal name.
Fox News noted in its Saturday profile of the attorneys that both have “represented Democrat clients and taken on left-leaning cases especially those taking aim at President Donald Trump, his administration and his supporters.”
According to CBS, the attorneys’ first public move on Omar’s behalf was their written response to the Justice Department regarding the search warrant executed on her residence. The nature and scope of that search, along with the specific allegations under investigation, remain subjects of intense scrutiny.
As the federal investigations continue, Omar’s decision to retain lawyers with such extensive experience defending Democratic leaders and opposing Trump-related initiatives signals her expectation of a protracted legal battle. Whether their combined expertise will be sufficient to navigate the allegations she faces remains to be seen.
