New Jersey Teacher Who Had Baby with 13-Year-Old Student Pleads Guilty to Sexual Misconduct

A former New Jersey elementary school teacher has entered a guilty plea to sexual misconduct charges after prosecutors say she engaged in a years-long illegal relationship with an underage student that resulted in the birth of a child — even as her now-adult victim insists he initiated the contact and wants the case dropped.

Laura Caron, 36, of Cape May Court House, pleaded guilty to second-degree endangering the welfare of a child with sexual conduct, Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland announced Friday. Under the terms of her plea agreement, the former teacher could still face up to five years in state prison when she appears for sentencing.

According to prosecutors, Caron first met the boy when she taught him and his brother fifth grade at Middle Township Elementary School in Cape May Court House. The student, born in 2005, would have been around 10 years old at the time.

Authorities allege the teacher developed an inappropriately close relationship with the family, with the boy and his siblings reportedly spending multiple nights per week sleeping at Caron’s home. Prosecutors claim the sexual abuse began when the victim was just 11 years old in 2016 and continued for four years, until he turned 15.

Discovery Through Social Media

The relationship produced a daughter in 2019, when the victim was 13 years old. According to the Post, the secret remained hidden for years until December 2024, when the boy’s father noticed a striking resemblance between Caron’s child, himself, and his son in a photograph posted on Facebook.

The discovery set off an investigation that uncovered disturbing details about the abuse. Prosecutors say the victim’s brother once witnessed Caron sexually assaulting his sleeping sibling. The boy’s sister also reported falling asleep beside her brother but waking to find him in Caron’s bed.

Despite the evidence and guilty plea, the victim — now believed to be 21 years old — has publicly defended Caron and challenged the prosecution’s characterization of their relationship.

“They need to drop all charges. I wasn’t groomed or raped or manipulated by her. She never initiated anything,” he told the Daily Mail. “I started everything. If it was up to me she wouldn’t have been in jail.”

Breach of Trust

Caron, a former basketball player at Pennsylvania’s Cabrini University, was initially charged on January 15, 2025, with aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, and endangering the welfare of a child. She has since pleaded guilty to the lesser endangerment charge.

“Teachers hold a position of great trust, and the allegations in this case represent a deeply troubling breach of that trust,” Prosecutor Sutherland said when announcing the original charges.

As part of her plea agreement, Caron must surrender her teaching license and forfeit any future public employment opportunities. She is scheduled to be sentenced in January.

Part of a Larger Pattern

The Cape May County case adds to what researchers have identified as an epidemic of “educator sexual misconduct” that has emerged over the past two decades. Leading social science investigators point to a “culture of permissiveness” in many school districts where warning signs of inappropriate relationships — such as teachers fraternizing with students after school hours — are overlooked or inadequately addressed.

Experts say the proliferation of smartphones and social media has exacerbated the problem by providing teachers and students with easy channels for private communication through text messages and social media platforms, making it easier to conceal inappropriate contact.

The issue has drawn federal attention. In September, according to Breitbart News, the Department of Education under the Trump administration announced a crackdown on school districts that enable sexual misconduct by failing to discipline teachers appropriately or by transferring problem educators to other schools — a practice critics call “passing the trash.”

The department launched investigations into approximately 20 school districts suspected of engaging in this practice.

“This epidemic of nationwide sexual abuse in our schools must end,” Education Secretary Linda MacMahon said in a letter distributed to school districts across the country.

The case highlights an ongoing debate about how the justice system should respond when victims of childhood sexual abuse later defend their abusers. Legal experts note that minors cannot consent to sexual contact with adults in positions of authority, regardless of who allegedly initiated the relationship or how the victim feels about it years later.

Caron’s sentencing is expected to take place in January, where a judge will determine whether she receives prison time or a lesser penalty under the terms of her guilty plea.
