The father who used a concealed carry handgun to stop the attacker at Silver Rail Elementary School called his mother shortly afterward and told her he had killed the gunman, according to CBS News reporting cited by Breitbart News.
The man was identified as Kaylub Giamanco, a 36-year-old father of two daughters who attend the school. Police had initially described the person who killed the attacker only as a “bystander.”
A phone call to his mother
Giamanco’s mother, Kenda Freeman, told CBS News that her son called her after the shooting and said, “Mom, I just shot and killed somebody.”
Freeman said she responded, “Kaylub, tell me about it.”
According to his mother, Giamanco then described what he had seen: “A man went into my daughters’ school and shot kids and I looked at him point-blank, and I shot and killed him, Mom.”
Freeman recounted that her son sensed something was wrong and acted on it. “Kaylub knew something was not right, so he pulled up onto the grass, grabbed his gun and basically stalked the gunman back into the school,” she said.
She added that he entered the building through a window the attacker had shot out. “He crawled through a window that the gunman had shot out. He army-crawled through the window.”
Four killed before the shooter was stopped
Breitbart News reported that the alleged attacker, a 16-year-old, used a pump shotgun his mother had given him for his birthday. He killed four people and was still carrying dozens of rounds of ammunition when Giamanco shot him dead, according to the outlet.
CBS LA reported on how Freeman described her reaction to her son’s actions. “I told him he was a hero, he did what he had to do, and that he did the right thing, and that I was proud of him and that he was a hero and he saved a lot of lives,” she said.
An armed parent, not a responding officer
The account places a civilian — a parent with children inside the school — at the center of the sequence of events that ended the attack, rather than law enforcement. Giamanco’s decision to move toward the gunman rather than away from him, as described by his mother, is the detail his family has focused on in speaking publicly.
Police have not publicly released a detailed timeline of the confrontation. The identification of Giamanco as the person who shot the attacker followed initial reports that referred only to a bystander.
The Silver Rail Elementary attack and the armed response to it are likely to feed into the broader debate over concealed carry and armed civilians in public spaces — a debate that has repeatedly followed mass shootings at schools. Supporters of concealed carry have argued that armed citizens can shorten the window between the start of an attack and its end; critics have raised concerns about armed civilians in chaotic scenes and the risks of misidentification.
The shooter’s weapon, a shotgun given to him by his mother as a birthday gift, is also likely to draw scrutiny as investigators continue to establish how the attack unfolded.
