A 53-year-old sports journalist was found dead on Sunday in what investigators are treating as a homicide, after his charred body was discovered on farmland in southern Italy.
Luigi “Luca” Esposito, who went by his nickname professionally, is believed to have been shot to death before his body was set on fire, according to authorities. Firefighters made the grim discovery while responding to a brush fire near Eboli in the province of Salerno. Shell casings were reportedly found at the scene.
Esposito served as editor-in-chief of TuttoSalernitana.com, a local soccer news website. He also contributed to the newspaper La CittĂ di Salerno, appeared as a soccer commentator on regional broadcaster Otto Channel, and wrote for TuttoC.com.
Investigation Focuses on Personal and Professional Life
Investigators are examining both Esposito’s personal and professional relationships as they work to establish a motive for the killing. While Italian media outlets have reported that authorities are currently placing greater emphasis on his private life, officials have not ruled out a potential connection to his journalism work.
The Committee to Protect Journalists has called for a comprehensive investigation into whether the killing was linked to Esposito’s reporting. “We are deeply shocked by the brutal killing of Italian sports journalist Luca Esposito,” said Attila Mong, the organization’s Europe representative. “Italian authorities must act quickly and transparently to establish the full circumstances and determine whether this terrible event is linked to Luca Esposito’s journalism.”
Timeline of Disappearance
According to local reports, Esposito was last seen on the evening of July 17. He subsequently stopped answering his phone and missed a scheduled meeting. Phone records analyzed by investigators show his last call occurred on Saturday evening around 10:30 p.m., when he spoke with a colleague.
A woman identified as Mary Esposito, described in Italian press as a close friend of the journalist, indicated in a social media post that he had planned to travel to a property in Agropoli before his disappearance. On Sunday, she shared photos with Esposito on Facebook, writing: “These are just a very small number of the photos in our life together. Only those who know us know what I was for you and you were for me. You will always be with me Luca.”
The investigation into Esposito’s death remains ongoing as authorities work to piece together the circumstances surrounding the killing and identify those responsible.
