Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) sharpened his criticism of the Trump administration’s handling of the military, saying on Sunday that President Donald Trump views servicemembers as “toys” and props to project strength rather than as human beings with families and stakes in the consequences of war.
Appearing on ABC’s “This Week,” Gallego, a Marine Corps veteran, took aim at both the president and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, arguing that a “deep, deep, deep mistrust” of leadership has taken hold among troops and their families as the administration grapples with an ongoing conflict.
Lack of Planning Cited
Gallego’s remarks came in response to a question about the administration’s handling of the war, though the specific conflict was not named in the clip. Gallego did not hold back in his assessment of the Defense Secretary, asserting that Hegseth is “absolutely not qualified to be leading the Department of Defense.”

The senator’s most pointed critique was reserved for the president, whom he accused of a “lackadaisical attitude” toward the men and women in uniform and their deployments.
“He just doesn’t really care about the troops,” Gallego said. “He thinks about them more as toys and as ways to basically show off or show its strength, but not the fact that they truly, at the end of the day, are humans. They’re Americans. And they have families, and these things, these deployments, these wars have consequences.”
Those comments echo a broader narrative from Democrats who have accused Trump of treating the military as a political prop, a charge that has intensified as the administration has leaned into displays of military might.
