U.S. Treasury Sanctions India-Based Maritime Fraud Network in Bid to Choke Iran’s Shadow Fleet

Treasury’s Operation Economic Outcast cracks down on an elaborate fraud scheme enabling Iran’s sanctions evasion through phantom ship registrations and fake maritime documents.

U.S. Treasury Sanctions India-Based Maritime Fraud Network in Bid to Choke Iran’s Shadow Fleet

The U.S. Treasury Department escalated its financial assault on Iran’s sanctions-busting networks Wednesday, unveiling fresh sanctions against an India-based maritime fraud operation accused of propping up Tehran’s covert oil shipping empire.

Phantom Ships, Real Consequences

At the center of the crackdown is Suniel Kumar Sharma and his wife Jaspreet Preeti Shahid, whose alleged criminal network since 2014 has fabricated ship registrations from multiple countries to create a global facade for Iranian oil tankers. These “false-flag” vessels operate without legitimate insurance or safety oversight — a ticking environmental and financial time bomb, Treasury warns.

“We know where you are,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent declared, vowing to keep tightening the noose on intermediaries who help Iran bypass restrictions. Three additional Indian nationals were named in what officials describe as a deliberate strike against middlemen enabling Tehran’s evasion tactics.

Turkey’s Aviation Link Targeted

Simultaneously, Treasury blacklisted Turkey’s Fugo Ground Services Inc. for allegedly maintaining covert ties to Iran’s aviation sector — despite prior warnings. The company reportedly serviced U.S.-sanctioned Iranian airlines as recently as September, providing a lifeline to what officials call a “key enabler” of Iran’s militant proxies.

Sources familiar with Operation Economic Outcast tell Breitbart News the latest sanctions reflect an evolving strategy to dismantle layered evasion networks piece by piece. With Iranian shadow fleet movements reportedly frozen since mid-October due to U.S. naval pressure, Treasury appears bent on ensuring the blockade holds.

All assets tied to the newly designated entities and individuals are now blocked under U.S. jurisdiction, with businesses worldwide required to report any holdings to OFAC or face penalties themselves.
