Trump Admin to Deploy 1,000 Poll Monitors for Midterms, Dhillon Says

The Justice Department is training about 1,000 election monitors for November's midterms, with officials vowing to watch for fraud and ensure voter confidence, according to Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon.

Trump Admin to Deploy 1,000 Poll Monitors for Midterms, Dhillon Says

The Trump administration is preparing to deploy roughly 1,000 poll monitors for the November midterm elections, according to Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, who said the Department of Justice will take an active role in overseeing balloting nationwide.

In comments reported Tuesday by the Washington Examiner, Dhillon said officials are training the monitors using materials from previous administrations and will be on the lookout for issues including suspected election fraud.

“We just did it in the primary. We will do it to the tune of approximately 1,000 election monitors in the November election. This is something that DOJ does,” Dhillon said.

The announcement comes as the administration continues to press for new voting restrictions, including the SAVE America Act, which would require voters to show photo identification and proof of citizenship before casting ballots in federal elections. A recent survey from Tea Party Patriots Action found that a majority of general election voters support the measure, according to Breitbart News.

“The SAVE America Act is rightfully at the top of President Trump’s domestic agenda. Our poll shows that an overwhelming majority of American voters – including a strong majority of Democrats – support proof of U.S. citizenship in order to register to vote and showing voter ID when casting a ballot,” Tea Party Patriots Action Chairman Jenny Beth Martin said.

White House Focus on Election Security

President Donald Trump has repeatedly called on lawmakers to pass the SAVE America Act, arguing that it is essential to safeguarding American elections. During a White House address last week detailing election vulnerabilities, Trump said the only reason one would oppose the bill is if they want to cheat.

“You want to cheat, because your policies are so bad and your candidates are so pathetic that you can’t get away or can’t get elected any other way,” Trump said.

“This landmark bill requires that all voters must show photo voter ID. How simple is that? Could I have your photo, please? Photo voter ID. All voters must provide proof of citizenship,” he added.

Dhillon emphasized that election integrity is a top priority for the administration, saying the goal is to ensure every American feels confident in the outcome of the vote.

“Elections that all Americans can feel confident in is a high priority of this White House,” Dhillon said during a recent interview. “We really want every American to get out there and vote, and feel confident in the outcome. That’s an important part of it, is not just vote, but also feel like you can accept the outcome of the elections.”

Republican Optimism for Midterms

The push for election monitoring comes as Republicans express confidence about their prospects in the upcoming midterms. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) said recently that he believes the outlook for the party is favorable.

“I like our chances. The map has never been better,” Emmer said.

The deployment of poll monitors is a standard Justice Department practice, though the scale of the operation and the administration’s focus on fraud allegations have drawn attention in the run-up to the election. Critics of voter ID laws have argued that such measures can suppress turnout among minority and low-income voters, while supporters insist they are necessary to prevent fraud and maintain public trust.

Dhillon’s comments suggest the administration is preparing to take an aggressive approach to election oversight, building on efforts begun during the primary season. The monitors will be tasked with observing polling places, ensuring compliance with federal law, and following up on any investigations that arise.

The announcement adds another layer to an already contentious election season, with both parties gearing up for a high-stakes fight over control of Congress. With control of the House and Senate on the line, the midterms are expected to draw intense scrutiny from all sides.

As the November election approaches, the administration’s deployment of poll monitors and its push for the SAVE America Act are likely to remain central issues in the national debate over election integrity. Whether the monitors will uncover any significant problems remains to be seen, but the administration has made clear it intends to be visible and active in overseeing the process.
