Fresh off her primary victory, Florida state Rep. Angie Nixon is facing fresh scrutiny over a business venture that she says was born out of a belief that her political allies had nowhere left to gather safely.
Nixon, a Jacksonville Democrat and member of the Democratic Socialists of America, won her Senate primary on Tuesday, setting up a November showdown with incumbent Republican Sen. Ashley Moody. But as her campaign moves into the general election, a 2024 Instagram post about her, a coffee shop, and a bookstore has resurfaced, drawing attention to the brand she chose for the establishment: “Cafe Resistance.”
‘No Places for Us to Be Safely’
In the 2024 Instagram post, Nixon explained her decision to open the shop, claiming that “freedoms” were under attack and that there were “no places for us to be safely.” She went on to say that she and her allies were “getting kicked out of spaces because we wanted to stand up for humanity.”
She also took aim at political leaders in Tallahassee, saying they were “wanting to ban books” and “ban the teaching of true history, particularly true black history.” Her comments appeared to reference Florida’s moves to remove sexually explicit books from schools and conservative efforts to reshape how race and history are taught.
“I wanted to open the space so everyone can feel welcome, and so where we can organize and build power,” Nixon said in the post. She described the venture as a “Space, community, education” and a place of “RESISTANCE!”
‘Resistance’ as a Rallying Cry
The term “resistance” became a prominent rallying cry for the left following President Donald Trump’s election and the implementation of his “MAGA” agenda. Nixon has continued to promote her cafe while on the campaign trail, according to recent social media posts.
Platform: Abolish ICE, Universal Childcare, Citizenship for Illegal Aliens
Nixon’s political platform includes abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), ending mass incarceration, implementing universal childcare, and providing an immediate pathway to citizenship for illegal aliens. As Breitbart News has documented, she has made a series of controversial statements over the years, including praising a Marxist cop killer while campaigning in a church and referring to drag shows she attended with her children as “wholesome” entertainment.
Now that she has secured the Democratic nomination, Nixon will face Senator Moody in what is expected to be a highly contested race in November.
