Miami-Dade authorities have arrested a Cuban national who they say poured hot wax on herself and one of her daughters before setting a fire inside the kitchen of her Miami home, according to law enforcement officials.
Meliza Campos-Sanchez, who entered the United States illegally in May 2022, was taken into custody this week by the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office. She faces two counts of neglect of a child, one count of cruelty toward a child involving child abuse, and one count of arson.
The arrest stems from an incident on August 16, when police officers responded to Campos-Sanchez’s home and found that she had intentionally started a fire in her kitchen and was throwing items into it, according to a report from Breitbart News.
Campos-Sanchez was transported to a nearby hospital for a mental health evaluation before being booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
Investigators later discovered two Instagram videos posted by Campos-Sanchez. In one, she shows herself pouring hot wax on herself and then pouring wax onto her daughter’s hands. In the other, she is seen throwing objects into the fire she allegedly set.
The Department of Homeland Security issued a statement condemning the actions, with a spokesperson calling the case an example of the consequences of what they described as “reckless open-border policies.” The spokesperson also noted that Campos-Sanchez “would have never been able to enter our country” had it not been for the Biden administration’s immigration policies.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has lodged a detainer against Campos-Sanchez, requesting that Miami officials hold her if she is released from jail, so she can be transferred to federal custody. The DHS spokesperson said ICE is working with Florida partners to ensure she is removed from the country after facing justice.
Campos-Sanchez’s illegal entry into the U.S. was reported to have occurred in May 2022 through Florida, during what authorities described as the peak of the Biden administration’s mass migration.
The case has renewed debate over immigration enforcement and public safety, though local officials have not yet provided additional details on the circumstances leading up to the alleged incident.
Campos-Sanchez remains in custody at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. Her next court appearance has not been publicly scheduled.
