Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs has been formally charged with misdemeanor battery and misdemeanor criminal damage to property, according to Wisconsin court records confirmed Thursday.
The charges stem from an alleged domestic incident at Jacobs’ home three months ago, and the Brown County District Attorney’s Office emphasized that the filing is only a formal accusation, not a determination of guilt.
District Attorney David L. Lasee said in a statement that his office sought a fair and complete review of the evidence, some of which only recently became available due to ongoing forensic efforts by law enforcement.
“A criminal complaint is nothing more than a written, formal accusation against a defendant alleging the commission of criminal offenses and does not raise any inference of guilt,” the statement added, noting that Jacobs is presumed innocent and that the office would not comment further on the ongoing case.
The Alleged Incident
According to ESPN, the conflict began when Jacobs’ alleged girlfriend searched his phone and found he had been communicating with other women. She became upset and threw his phone, then told Jacobs he could look through her phone and asked him to call a car to take her to Chicago.
When she attempted to retrieve her phone, the complaint says Jacobs did not return it, grabbed her arm, and a physical struggle began that lasted several minutes.
The complaint further alleges that as the woman tried to leave through Jacobs’ garage, he “grabbed her and threw her to the ground,” causing her to strike her head and suffer an injury.
A police officer observed redness on the woman’s face and neck and felt a bump on the back of her head, according to the report. She described being in pain from the injuries and said Jacobs did not return one of her phones and damaged the other.
Charges and Potential Penalties
Jacobs faces Class A misdemeanor charges, which carry a potential fine of over $10,000 and up to nine months in prison if convicted.
His attorneys have noted that prosecutors filed misdemeanor charges rather than domestic violence charges, and they said the matter would be addressed in court.
NFL and Packers Response
The NFL is conducting its own investigation into Jacobs’ conduct. League spokesperson Brian McCarthy said Thursday, “We have been closely monitoring all developments in the matter, which remains under review.”
The Green Bay Packers also issued a brief statement, saying they would continue to cooperate with the NFL as they work through the process and would have no further comment at this time.
Jacobs has not yet publicly commented on the charges. The case remains ongoing in Brown County court.
