Rescue crews in Nepal pulled two people to safety on Saturday after they had been trapped for 10 days in the wake of the devastating floods and landslides that struck the region late last month, according to the Associated Press.
In one operation, a man was rescued from a hydropower tunnel near the 740-foot mark and evacuated by helicopter. The survivor, who was reported in stable condition and taken to a hospital for treatment, said he shouted repeatedly when he spotted the lights carried by rescue teams as they worked their way through the debris-filled tunnel. He told responders he could not believe they had found him after such a long time.
The rescue came a day after two other individuals were brought to safety from the same tunnel system, with video footage showing crews hauling the men out of a passage covered in mud and debris, as reported by PBS News.
The AP reported that roughly 900 hydropower project workers across 12 sites in Nepal remain unaccounted for, and officials believe as many as 500 people are still trapped inside the tunnels. Rescue efforts are ongoing, with teams from several Asian countries and the United States assisting.
In a separate operation, crews rescued a woman who had been trapped inside a home in the Nuwakot district, where they found her covered in mud. Video footage captured the moment of her discovery as responders gave her water to drink. Another clip shows her being carried away from the house to safety, with those at the scene washing her face and wrapping her in clean towels. The woman was airlifted to Kathmandu for medical treatment, according to the AP.
Deadly Floods and Landslides
The rescues come after heavy rainfall triggered mudslides and flooding that devastated communities in Nepal and occupied Tibet, as Breitbart News reported on August 27. That reporting also noted the rescue of a 97-year-old grandmother who had been trapped in mud for almost nine hours; an earthmover was used to bring her to safety.
The scale of the disaster is staggering. According to Nepal’s disaster management agency, at least 1,300 people were killed in the August 26 floods, which were likely caused by a glacier collapse, and more than 5,000 remain missing.
Saturday’s rescues offered a rare glimmer of hope amid the widespread destruction, underscoring the determination of rescue teams working under extreme conditions to find survivors more than a week after the disaster struck.
