A U.S. Air Force Tactical Air Controller died Saturday evening after falling from the rafters of the Alamodome in San Antonio during a pregame ceremony ahead of the UTSA–Navy football game, according to Breitbart News. The airman plunged from the stadium ceiling in view of thousands of spectators gathered for the pregame festivities.
The fallen airman was one of four service members scheduled to rappel from the rafters as part of the opening ceremony, which was tied to UTSA’s “Salute to Armed Forces & Veterans Game.” The team members were positioned more than 150 feet above the field.
Task & Purpose, a defense news outlet, reported that a spokesperson for Nellis Air Force Base confirmed the death and said the incident is under investigation.
A Unit That Trains the Military’s Eyes on the Ground
All four airmen who took part in the rappel are stationed at Joint Base San Antonio-Camp Bullis, according to the reporting. The airman who died belonged to the 6th Combat Training Squadron, Detachment 2 — a unit that trains Tactical Air Controllers, the airmen who call in and direct airstrikes from forward ground positions in wartime. The squadron is headquartered at Nellis Air Force Base outside Las Vegas, while the detachment that participated in Saturday’s ceremony operates out of Camp Bullis.
Medical personnel responded immediately after the fall, treating the airman on the field before he was taken to a local hospital. He died there from his injuries.
The Game Went On, and the Conference Responded
Once the critically injured airman had been removed from the field, the game between the Navy Midshipmen and the UTSA Roadrunners proceeded as scheduled.
The American Conference, the NCAA league that includes both programs, issued a statement on X expressing grief over the incident. “The American Conference is deeply saddened by tonight’s pregame incident at the Alamodome,” the statement read. “Our thoughts are with the individual involved, their family and colleagues, and everyone who witnessed or was impacted by it.”
UTSA also released a statement, shared on platforms including Instagram, that offered crisis hotline numbers and acknowledged the toll the scene could take on those in attendance. “We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred at the start of tonight’s football game,” the university said. “Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the soldier who was affected, his family, and military colleagues. We recognize that members of our campus community may be emotionally affected by this incident and are activating wellbeing services to support our faculty, staff, and students.”
The airman’s identity had not been released as of press time. The investigation into what caused the fall remains open.
