Florida Flag Football Coach Arrested After Allegedly Choking 15-Year-Old Girl in Post-Game Brawl

A Palm Beach father and his teenage daughter face assault charges after a youth flag football game erupted into violence, with witnesses claiming the coach employed a 'choking mechanism' on a 15-year-old player.

Florida Flag Football Coach Arrested After Allegedly Choking 15-Year-Old Girl in Post-Game Brawl

What began as trash talk after a recreational flag football game in Palm Beach, Florida, escalated into a violent brawl that left a father-daughter coaching duo facing serious criminal charges.

Brandon Mayer, 37, and his 16-year-old daughter were arrested following an October 20 incident in which Mayer allegedly choked a 15-year-old player while his daughter is accused of initiating the physical confrontation.

The Post-Game Confrontation

According to 15-year-old Sophia Lopez, the altercation began during the customary handshake line following the game. Lopez told CBS12 News that the opposing player started mocking her team for losing.

“She started making fun of me for losing the game,” Lopez explained. “The one thing I said to her that set her off was, ‘You just fell on your face, and it’s a rec game.'”

What happened next turned a typical teenage spat into something far more serious. The 16-year-old girl allegedly grabbed Lopez by the hair and pulled her to the ground. That’s when the situation dramatically escalated.

Alleged Choking Incident

The head referee at the game reported that Mayer, who served as both the 16-year-old’s father and coach, then employed what was described as a “choking mechanism” on the 15-year-old Lopez while she was already on the ground.

Lopez described the terrifying experience in stark terms. “It felt like everything was so tight,” she said. “It felt like I was just, I was never gonna get out until I just saw black.”

Her father, Ryan Lopez, who also served as Sophia’s coach, witnessed the alleged assault and provided additional details about the choking.

“It was a complete choke,” Ryan Lopez stated. “So, he’s pulling her forward, and he’s trying to pull her back, not by her waist, which would be the common-sense thing to do.”

Broader Melee Ensues

Ryan Lopez then intervened, jumping into the altercation to protect his daughter. The conflict devolved further as the entire group ended up on the ground in a tangled mess.

According to Ryan’s account, Mayer’s daughter kicked him in the face with her cleat while he was down on the ground, adding another layer to the chaotic scene.

Conflicting Accounts

Mayer and his daughter have disputed the version of events provided by both the referee and the Lopez family. The father-daughter pair claim that the 16-year-old was actually the victim of assault and that Mayer was merely attempting to break up the fight rather than instigate violence.

However, law enforcement authorities found the Mayers’ explanation unconvincing.

Criminal Charges Filed

Palm Beach authorities moved forward with charges against both Brandon Mayer and his teenage daughter. The father faces the more serious charge of felony Battery by Strangulation, a reflection of the severity of the alleged choking incident.

His daughter has been charged with simple assault in connection with allegedly initiating the physical confrontation by pulling Lopez to the ground by her hair.

Mayer was booked into custody on October 28 and released the following day after posting a substantial $75,000 bond.

Youth Sports Violence Under Scrutiny

The incident adds to growing concerns about parental behavior at youth sporting events. What was meant to be a recreational flag football game—a non-contact version of the sport specifically designed to be safer for young players—instead became a scene of alleged violence serious enough to warrant felony charges.

The case raises questions about adult supervision and behavior at youth sports competitions, where emotions can run high but where setting an appropriate example for young athletes should remain paramount.

As the criminal proceedings move forward, both families will likely have to reckon with how a minor dispute between teenagers spiraled into a situation with potentially life-altering legal consequences for the adults involved.
