Aisha Wahab, Afghan-American Progressive, Wins California’s 14th District Special Election

State Sen. Aisha Wahab defeated Melissa Hernandez in Tuesday's special election to fill the seat vacated by former Rep. Eric Swalwell, according to Decision Desk HQ, NBC News, and the AP.

Aisha Wahab, Afghan-American Progressive, Wins California's 14th District Special Election

California State Senator Aisha Wahab, an Afghan-American progressive who has drawn criticism for her far-left positions, has won the special election to represent the state’s 14th Congressional District, according to projections from Decision Desk HQ, NBC News, and the Associated Press. With more than 95% of the vote counted, Wahab defeated ‘moderate’ Democrat Melissa Hernandez by a margin of 53% to 47%, the outlets reported.

The election was called at 6:04 PM EDT on August 20, 2026, according to Decision Desk HQ. Wahab will serve out the remainder of former Rep. Eric Swalwell’s term.

The two Democrats advanced from the June 16 primary, but since neither secured a majority, the race moved to a general election runoff. Wahab’s victory adds another progressive voice to the House, and she has already drawn praise from prominent left-wing figures, including Hasan Piker, the Democratic commentator and self-described communist, who lauded her ‘radical agenda,’ as reported by The Gateway Pundit.

A Controversial Record

Wahab’s campaign drew national attention for her outspoken views. She previously accused Israel of genocide and attacked the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), a pro-Israel lobbying group. AIPAC reportedly poured millions of dollars into Hernandez’s campaign in an effort to defeat Wahab, according to The Gateway Pundit.

In victory, Wahab was celebrated by the California chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America, which tweeted that she ‘Adds Another Rashida Tlaib Ally in Congress!’—a reference to the progressive Michigan congresswoman known for her criticism of Israel.

Andrea Shaffer, an anti-Marxist activist, noted that Wahab made history as the first Muslim and first Afghan-American elected to the California State Senate, a fact that her supporters have highlighted in the wake of her congressional win.

Swalwell’s Departure

The special election was triggered by the resignation of Eric Swalwell in April 2026, amid sexual assault allegations. Swalwell also dropped out of the California governor’s race. In a separate development, it was reported on Thursday that the FBI seized electronic devices from Swalwell and raided his Washington, D.C., home, according to The Gateway Pundit.

Wahab’s victory is seen as a setback for moderate Democrats and pro-Israel groups, who had backed Hernandez heavily. With her win, Wahab is expected to align with the far-left wing of the Democratic Party, potentially joining other progressive members in pushing for policies such as a cease-fire in Gaza and broader social democratic reforms.

The Gateway Pundit, which first reported the results, described Wahab as a ‘radical, far-left Afghan Muslim,’ a characterization her critics have echoed, while her supporters see her as a trailblazer for Muslim and Afghan-American representation.

As the 14th District prepares for her arrival in Washington, Wahab’s election is likely to intensify debates within the Democratic Party over its direction on foreign policy and domestic economic issues.
