All 12 Major Acting Emmys Go to White Performers, Prompting #EmmysSoWhite Revival

Breitbart's John Nolte blasts 'Democrat-run Hollywood' after Variety reports a 39% drop in nominated performers of color, with every lead and supporting acting Emmy going to white actors.

All 12 Major Acting Emmys Go to White Performers, Prompting #EmmysSoWhite Revival

Every winner in the twelve major acting categories at the 78th Emmy Awards was white, a result that has revived the #EmmysSoWhite hashtag and drawn sharp criticism from Breitbart columnist John Nolte.

According to Breitbart, all ten actors who took the stage on Monday night in the lead and supporting races for drama and comedy, plus lead actor and actress in a limited series, came from outside underrepresented communities. The two remaining categories—supporting actor and actress in a limited series—were handed out a week earlier at the Creative Arts ceremonies, a reshuffling of five categories that drew objections from Hollywood’s guilds but, as Breitbart noted, did not change the overall math.

Variety, which Breitbart cited in its report, counted 17 performers of color nominated in this year’s lead and supporting races, down from 28 the previous year—a decline of roughly 39 percent. The outlet noted that the number of nominated actors and hosts of color peaked at 49 in 2021, the last time the field produced the #EmmysSoWhite hashtag.

A Pattern, Not an Accident?

Nolte did not treat the outcome as an anomaly. “It was a clean sweep for Whitey in every single Emmy acting category Monday night,” he wrote, arguing that the results reveal something about the industry’s progressive self-image. He pointed out that one white, heterosexual male—Matthew Rhys—appeared twice on the list of twelve winners, because voters chose a white actor a second time rather than award a non-white performer.

The columnist directed the blame at what he termed “Democrat-run Hollywood,” framing the industry as the “wokest, most ‘progressive,’ most leftist, most race-obsessed group of identity-politicstards on the planet.” In his view, when Emmy voters are free to make choices without outside pressure from ratings or the market, the outcome speaks for itself.

Nolte preempted a likely objection: that the winners simply deserved to win. He conceded that Matthew Rhys is “an amazing talent,” but argued that merit was beside the point. “Merit is not the point,” he wrote. “Merit is never the point, not in the Brave New World created by the Woke Police.”

His conclusion was blunt: “everyone knows Democrats are every bit as racist today as when they started a civil war to hold on to their slaves 160 years ago.”

The Numbers Behind the Backlash

The drop in nominations for performers of color is the statistical core of the controversy. Going from 28 nominees to 17 in a single year is a substantial shift, and it comes after a period in which the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences had been under sustained pressure to broaden its membership and its slate of honorees. The 2021 ceremony, which produced the original #EmmysSoWhite wave, was followed by years in which the nomination counts for actors and hosts of color climbed—until this year’s reversal.

Breitbart noted that the supporting categories in limited series, which were moved off the main broadcast and handed out at the Creative Arts ceremonies a week earlier, were included in the overall tally. That change, driven by a reshuffling of five categories, had already drawn “ire” from Hollywood’s guilds, according to the report, but it did not alter the final count of white winners across the twelve major acting races.

The network’s framing places the outcome squarely within a broader political argument about the entertainment industry’s ideological leanings. Nolte’s column is not merely a complaint about awards results; it is an assertion that the industry’s professed commitment to diversity collapses when the choices are entirely its own to make.

A Recurring Flashpoint

#EmmysSoWhite first trended in 2021, when a similarly homogeneous slate of winners prompted an internal reckoning at the Television Academy. That cycle led to pledges and structural changes aimed at expanding the voter pool. The fact that the hashtag is back five years later suggests that whatever reforms were implemented have not produced the results their architects promised—or that the awards themselves do not track the demographic composition of the industry in the way critics assume.

Neither the Television Academy nor any of the winning performers has publicly responded to Breitbart’s characterization. Variety’s reporting, which Breitbart relied upon for its statistical claims, framed the decline in nominees of color as a factual observation rather than a political indictment.

For now, the story is likely to remain a talking point on the right, where the Emmys have become a recurring example of what critics see as performative progressivism. Whether it changes anything inside the industry is another question. Awards shows have weathered similar controversies before, and the cyclical nature of nomination patterns means next year’s ceremony could look very different.

What Nolte’s column makes clear is that the debate over who wins—and who gets nominated—is no longer confined to Hollywood’s trade press. It has become part of a larger argument about whether the entertainment industry’s stated values match its actual behavior, an argument that shows no sign of cooling.
