Spanish law enforcement officials detained three Moroccan migrants on Sunday night after they allegedly threw bottles filled with corrosive liquid at military personnel in the Spanish exclave of Ceuta, according to local reports. The incident marks the third known attack on Spanish military officials by groups of illegal migrants who surged into the territory last month.
The attack occurred Sunday afternoon in Ceuta’s San Amaro neighborhood, where the three men reportedly hurled the bottles at military officials. None of the officials were injured, and Spanish Civil Guard officers quickly responded with a search that led to the capture of the suspects, according to El Faro de Ceuta and other Spanish outlets.
Unnamed police sources told El Mundo that the military officials were unarmed and not equipped with protective gear at the time of the attack. The sources reportedly described the assault as “prepared” by the migrants, suggesting a level of planning rather than an impulsive act.
Weekend of Violence
Sunday’s attack follows a series of violent incidents against the military in Ceuta. Between Thursday and Saturday, two separate ambushes involving stones left at least five people injured, as reported by El Mundo. The attacks have raised alarms about the safety of military personnel in the region, who are not typically authorized to perform law enforcement duties under Spanish law.
In addition to the attacks on officials, residents of Ceuta have themselves been targeted. During a peaceful protest on Friday night, bottles containing a similar corrosive liquid were thrown at demonstrators, according to El Faro de Ceuta. Witnesses reported that at least four individuals were involved in that incident, one of whom fled the scene.
Allegations of NGO Involvement
The investigation into the recent attacks has expanded to include allegations against a non-governmental organization. According to reports, local police officers identified several members of the NGO No Name Kitchen purchasing materials at Ceuta supermarkets that could be used in such attacks. Ok Diario further reported that the NGO is allegedly hiding illegal migrants at a facility in Ceuta and supplying them with the materials used in the assaults.
These allegations have drawn sharp criticism from Spain’s anti-mass migration VOX party. VOX MEP Jorge Buxadé called on the European Union to freeze any funding that the EU may provide to the NGO. “We cannot allow NGOs that are complicit in the invasion and enemies of the Spanish people to continue acting like criminal organizations, especially with public funds, and especially when they attack our defenders,” Buxadé reportedly said.
Calls for Military Authority
The recurrence of violent attacks against the military has prompted the Spanish Troops and Sailors Association (ATME) to urge the government to officially recognize military personnel as holding a high-risk profession and to designate them as agents of authority. Such a designation would allow the military to conduct daily law enforcement functions on par with Spain’s police and Civil Guard, a change that would require legislative action.
Under current Spanish law, military officials are only granted law enforcement faculties under specific circumstances. The ATME argues that the increasing frequency of attacks on troops in Ceuta highlights the need for a more permanent legal framework to protect them.
The situation in Ceuta remains tense as residents continue to protest against the unresolved migrant influx, which has overwhelmed the city. The attacks on both security forces and civilians underscore the volatility of the crisis, with local authorities struggling to maintain order while addressing the root causes of the mass arrival.
