Chicago recorded another violent weekend as 38 people were shot, including two fatalities, according to local reports. The incidents unfolded across the city’s South Side, underscoring an ongoing crisis despite the state’s expansive gun restrictions.
Shootings Begin Saturday Night
The first fatal shooting occurred Saturday just after 11:20 p.m. on East 37th Street near Michigan Avenue in the Bronzeville neighborhood, according to ABC 7. Three people were outside when an unknown assailant opened fire, fatally wounding a 32-year-old man.
Minutes later, in Washington Park in the 5400-block of South Cottage Grove Avenue, shots rang out in a crowded area. The circumstances remain unclear, including whether more than one shooter was involved. That incident wounded upward of 14 people and left a 35-year-old man dead.
In total, 38 individuals were shot over the weekend, with two killed, according to the outlet’s tally.
Homicide Toll Continues to Climb
The Chicago Sun-Times’ homicide database shows that 281 people have been killed in the Windy City so far this year, a figure that highlights the persistent difficulty of curbing gun violence in the nation’s third-largest city.
The weekend’s bloodshed comes as city, county, and state officials have enacted what supporters describe as some of the toughest gun laws in the country.
Strict Gun Laws Already in Place
Chicago has banned “assault weapons” and “high capacity” magazines, mandates a 72-hour waiting period for gun purchases, requires a Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card for all gun owners, and has a red flag law on the books. The city also requires concealed carry permits and prohibits carrying firearms on public transit for self-defense.
These measures mirror many of the gun control proposals pushed at the federal level by Democrats, who argue that such restrictions are essential to reducing gun violence. Yet critics point to the weekend’s shooting totals as evidence that these laws have not delivered the promised safety.
The latest incidents raise anew the debate over whether more gun control is the answer, or whether the focus should shift to enforcement, mental health, and addressing the root causes of urban violence.
No suspects have been named in either of the two fatal shootings, and investigations are ongoing, according to local authorities.
