A Massachusetts man is facing federal charges after allegedly orchestrating an elaborate scheme that involved voting fraud in the 2024 presidential election and a campaign to destroy the lives of his victims through fake immigration filings.
Yupeng Sun, 33, of Andover, Massachusetts, was arrested Wednesday and charged with submitting a fraudulent voter registration and casting a ballot under the identity of another Chinese national, according to prosecutors. The victim, a legal permanent resident (LPR) who was not eligible to vote, had his identity used without his knowledge.
Sun is accused of filing an online voter registration impersonating the victim and then casting an early voting ballot in the 2024 presidential election under that false identity.
The charges, filed in connection with the 2024 election, also allege Sun submitted fraudulent immigration forms under the names of the victim and the victim’s wife. Those filings, prosecutors say, caused the couple to lose their green cards and face deportation proceedings.
A Plot Unraveled at Logan Airport
The victims only learned of the alleged fraud when they returned from an overseas trip in June 2024 and were stopped at Boston’s Logan International Airport. They were placed under immigration scrutiny and soon discovered that their legal status had been severely compromised.
According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), Sun had rented a room from the victim’s family between 2021 and 2023, and the relationship had soured over time. The outlet reported that Sun was arrested in 2023 for allegedly assaulting the victim’s adult daughter, though those charges were dropped in 2024. Other disputes between Sun and the family reportedly escalated to civil litigation.
During one police interaction, Sun reportedly said, “They treat me as not good,” according to SCMP.
Anonymous Tips Led Back to Sun
In a curious twist, the case involves anonymous tips that Sun allegedly submitted to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) in April and May of 2026 — more than a year after the election. Those tips claimed the victim had voted illegally, an accusation that appears to have been designed to draw attention to the victim while deflecting suspicion from Sun himself.
Prosecutors described the scheme as an elaborate effort to ruin the lives of his victims, using the immigration system as a weapon.
NBC News in Boston reported that the victim and his wife “successfully petitioned the Boston Immigration Court to restore their green cards,” but not before enduring months of legal turmoil and the threat of deportation.
Revenge, or Something Else?
During their immigration hearings, the victims testified that Sun had gained access to their personal information after helping them apply for insurance during a period when the relationship was still friendly. They also suggested that Sun cast illegal ballots in their names as an act of revenge for his 2023 arrest.
If convicted, Sun faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000, according to prosecutors.
The case highlights vulnerabilities in the voter registration and early voting systems, even as election officials have repeatedly emphasized the rarity of individual voter fraud. Federal authorities have not commented on whether the fraudulent ballot was counted in the 2024 election.
Sun’s arrest comes amid ongoing public debate over election integrity, though federal investigators have consistently found that voter fraud is extremely rare and rarely affects election outcomes. This case, however, involves a deliberate and malicious attempt to abuse the system for personal vendettas.
The charges are merely allegations, and Sun is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
