DEA Joins Probe Into Hayden Panettiere’s Death as Overdose Suspected

The DEA has reportedly joined the investigation into actress Hayden Panettiere's death at 36, with officials saying it may stem from a drug overdose. 911 audio and a police report detail the moments surrounding her cardiac arrest in South Carolina.

DEA Joins Probe Into Hayden Panettiere's Death as Overdose Suspected

The Drug Enforcement Administration has reportedly joined the investigation into the death of actress Hayden Panettiere, who died Sunday at the age of 36 in Greenville, South Carolina, according to multiple reports.

Law enforcement officials confirmed to Page Six that the DEA is now working alongside the Greenville Police Department and the coroner’s office to investigate the circumstances of Panettiere’s death, which may have resulted from a drug overdose.

The actress, best known for her roles in Heroes and Nashville, died at a rented apartment in Greenville. According to the Daily Mail, 911 audio from the incident reveals that Panettiere went into cardiac arrest during a possible overdose.

911 Call Details

In the audio of a 911 call placed at 1:51 p.m., a female dispatcher described Panettiere as suffering from cardiac arrest. Moments later, a male dispatcher could be heard stating that the actress had suffered a suspected overdose at the home.

The Greenville County Coroner later indicated that there were no signs of trauma that would have contributed to her death, leaving the overdose theory as a central focus for investigators.

An unnamed source told TMZ that the nasal medication Narcan, commonly used to reverse opioid overdoses, was found in a mattress at the scene. The Daily Mail noted that it remains unclear whether the Narcan had been administered in an attempt to revive Panettiere.

Boyfriend Present at Time of Death

At the time of her death, Panettiere was with her boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, and his brother, Zach. According to a police report obtained by Page Six, Brian showed officers a bag of medication that Panettiere had been taking. While the substances in the bag were not identified, Panettiere’s hairdresser and close friend, Erick Orellana, told Page Six that the actress suffered from intense back pain.

The presence of the DEA in the investigation suggests that authorities are taking the overdose angle seriously, though no official cause of death has been released pending further investigation.

A Life Marked by Struggles

Panettiere’s death comes just months after the release of her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, in which she detailed a number of personal struggles dating back to her childhood. As Variety reported at the time, one of the book’s most shocking revelations involved an incident from when she was 18 years old.

In the memoir, Panettiere recalled being lured by a friend into a room and told to get into bed with a famous male actor who was naked. She also recounted the story on the On Purpose With Jay Shetty podcast, saying, Even though I felt I could make healthy decisions, safe decisions [at that age], I wasn’t capable of being fully aware of what was going on around me. It wasn’t until I found myself in predicaments that I realized my perspective completely shifted and I realized I was in danger. By the time I realized I was in danger, I was quite literally out to sea.

The book also touched on the heartbreaking decision to give up custody of her daughter, her experience with postpartum depression, and her struggle with alcoholism. Panettiere noted that these issues began to mirror the storyline of Juliette Barnes, the troubled singer she played on Nashville during that period.

A Hopeful Final Months

Despite her past difficulties, those close to Panettiere said she appeared hopeful and at peace in the weeks leading up to her death. Her final Instagram post, shared on July 27, celebrated good times and good friends, a stark contrast to the tragedy that would follow less than a month later.

The investigation remains ongoing, with the DEA’s involvement signaling that authorities are pursuing all leads. As the coroner’s office continues its work, friends, family, and fans are left to mourn the loss of a talented actress whose life was marked by both professional success and personal turmoil.

This story is developing, and further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
