Rep. Johnny Olszewski (D-MD) said Wednesday that impeaching President Donald Trump would be a top priority for Democrats if they win the House majority in the midterm elections, according to a CNN interview.
Appearing on CNN’s “News Central,” Olszewski told host Kate Bolduan that Trump has “certainly committed any number of impeachable offenses” and that Democrats need to make that case to the American public. But he also stressed the need to focus on lowering costs and addressing corruption broadly.
Olszewski: Accountability and Corruption Fight Are Key
When Bolduan asked whether investigating the president and possibly impeaching him should be a priority for a Democratic House majority, Olszewski responded, “Absolutely.”
“I think holding this administration accountable and fighting corruption in all forms should be a priority of a Democratic majority,” the Maryland Democrat said. He pointed to what he described as “cryptocurrency schemes,” “Qatari jets,” and “all the ways in which he’s personally benefited from his actions.”
Olszewski also called for Democrats to hold themselves accountable, including “meaningfully and truly ending stock trading by members of Congress” and finding other anti-corruption measures. He said corruption “does have a cost to the American people.”
“If that investigation and that accountability leads to impeachment, that’s something I’m certainly willing to pursue and support,” he added.
The comments come as Democrats campaign for control of the House, with party leaders increasingly signaling that oversight of the Trump administration would be a central part of their agenda if they win the majority. Olszewski, a freshman Democrat from Maryland’s 2nd District, has been a vocal critic of the president.
The interview highlights the growing debate within the Democratic Party over how aggressively to pursue impeachment. Some strategists have warned that focusing too heavily on impeachment could alienate swing voters, while others argue that accountability is essential to the party’s base.
Olszewski’s remarks are among the most explicit from a sitting Democrat this cycle about making impeachment a stated priority, rather than a possibility, if the party flips the House.
