SAN ANTONIO โ Two separate protests unfolded just feet apart outside the Joe Freeman Coliseum on Wednesday afternoon, as the Bexar County Democratic Party and the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL) rallied against President Donald Trump ahead of his evening appearance in the Alamo City, according to Breitbart Texas.
The demonstrations, organized independently but converging on the busy Houston Street entrance to the venue, drew several hundred protesters who waved signs and shouted anti-Trump slogans while motorists and arriving rallygoers looked on. Breitbart Texas reported that the two groups effectively merged into a single demonstration at the coliseum’s main entrance, where signs backing Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico mixed with PSL’s anti-ICE messaging.
Organizers Coordinated Online
Both groups promoted their plans on social media after the Trump administration announced the San Antonio stop. The PSL, which has long campaigned against Immigration and Customs Enforcement, used Instagram to frame the protest around the administration’s deportation policies.
In its post, the group argued that San Antonio, a majority-Hispanic city, has been disproportionately affected by federal immigration enforcement, noting that one in four deportations occurs in Texas. The PSL urged supporters to join the effort and declared that Trump is not welcome in the state. The organization has been a frequent presence at anti-ICE demonstrations nationwide.
The Bexar County Democratic Party, meanwhile, advertised its own protest in a Sunday Facebook post that pointed to the rally’s 4:30 p.m. start time and took aim at the president’s polling in the state. The post told supporters that Trump appears to believe Texas is competitive and called on them to send a message that he should resign.
A Rally at Capacity, a Line Outside
As the event began and the venue filled, several thousand people remained in line hoping to get inside, Breitbart Texas reported. A jumbotron was set up to allow those who could not enter โ after the coliseum reached capacity โ to watch the proceedings. Vendors circulated through the grounds selling apparel and merchandise bearing Trump’s name and likeness.
The protest crowd and the rallygoers largely kept to themselves, and law enforcement maintained a heavy presence on the streets and coliseum grounds throughout the afternoon. Officers from multiple agencies, including the U.S. Secret Service, closed the streets in front of the venue shortly before the president’s motorcade arrived just before 6:00 p.m.
Among those moving through the protest area were members of the Brown Berets, a pro-Chicano paramilitary organization; the 50501 organization; and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, according to Breitbart Texas.
Turnout Battle in the Background
The competing demonstrations reflected the broader political stakes of the visit: the president’s stated goal of boosting voter turnout ahead of the upcoming election, and the determination of Texas Democrats and left-wing groups to blunt that effort in a state they hope to make competitive.
While the protests were noisy and visible, they appeared to have little effect on the mood inside the line, where rallygoers waited patiently for a chance to see the president. The scene outside the coliseum โ dueling signs, a heavy police presence, and a long queue of supporters โ captured a Texas political moment that both parties are watching closely.
Randy Clark, a 32-year veteran of the U.S. Border Patrol who retired as Division Chief for Law Enforcement Operations in the Del Rio Sector, reported from the scene for Breitbart Texas.
