U.S. Border Patrol agents in Eagle Pass, Texas, arrested a Cuban national who had been deported after serving time for a child sex offense, the agency said this week.
On August 19, agents spotted a small group of suspected illegal aliens trying to cross the border and gave chase. After detaining all four, a records check revealed that one memberâ52-year-old Alexis Suarez-Trejosâwas a registered sex offender in Nevada and had been previously removed from the U.S.
Court records show Suarez-Trejos was convicted in 2001 in Clark County, Nevada, of an offense involving the sexual assault of a child under 14. He was sentenced to 40 months in prison and placed on the Nevada sex offender registry. After serving his sentence, he was deported.
Immigration records indicate Suarez-Trejos has a history of immigration violations and was most recently removed from the United States on October 22, 2025. His return makes him a repeat offender under federal re-entry law.
He now faces charges under 8 U.S.C. Section 1326 for re-entry after deportation. Because he is classified as an aggravated felon, he could be sentenced to up to 20 years in federal prison.
Del Rio Sector Chief Patrol Agent Anthony âScottâ Good said, âIllegal aliens who prey on the children of our communities are an egregious threat. Iâm proud of our agents who, every day, stand ready to protect this nation from such dangers.â
The arrest comes amid a larger Border Patrol push to stop repeat offenders. According to recent CBP announcements, the agency has reached a historic high of 21,271 agentsâmore than at any point in its history. That staffing increase has allowed for more routine patrols between ports of entry, making it harder for people to cross illegally undetected.
In the Del Rio Sector alone, apprehensions have dropped to fewer than 1,000 per month during fiscal year 2026, compared to a peak of more than 70,000 in December 2023, under strict border enforcement policies implemented by the Trump administration.
The case highlights a persistent issue: individuals with serious criminal recordsâespecially those involving crimes against childrenâcontinue to attempt illegal re-entry. Federal law treats such repeat offenders severely, and prosecutors can seek lengthy prison terms.
Suarez-Trejos is currently in federal custody awaiting trial. It was not immediately clear if he had obtained legal counsel.
