A tourist coach carrying Dutch travelers overturned in the Swiss Alps on Thursday afternoon, killing five passengers and injuring 40 more, according to Swiss cantonal police. The vehicle, operated by the Dutch tour company Oad, went off the road in a construction zone as it traveled from the town of Zernez toward Susch in the canton of Graubünden, police said in a statement released Friday morning.
All 45 people on board were adults, and police spokesperson Roman Ruegg said most, if not all, were Dutch nationals. The identities of the five deceased passengers had not been confirmed by authorities as of Friday.
A crash in a construction zone
The bus had departed the Netherlands on Monday and was bound for Austria when the accident occurred, the BBC reported. Police said the coach veered off the road during the afternoon hours, overturned, and came to rest at the scene. SRF reported that the wreckage was lifted from the accident site early Friday morning after numerous emergency services were deployed.
Of the 40 injured, three suffered serious injuries, seven were moderately injured, and the remaining 30 sustained minor injuries, according to police. Survivors were transported to various hospitals by seven rescue helicopters and 13 ambulance teams drawn from Swiss air rescue company Rega, Alpine Air Ambulance, and Heli Austria.
Parmelin offers condolences
Swiss President Guy Parmelin addressed the crash in a social media message, saying he was deeply shocked by the incident.
“I am deeply shocked and dismayed by today’s tragic accident involving a Dutch coach in Graubünden. At this painful time, my thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones. I offer my sincere condolences to the families of those who lost their lives,” Parmelin wrote. “I am very grateful for the efforts of the first responders.”
The president added that Swiss authorities would ensure a comprehensive and thorough investigation to establish all the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Oad, the Dutch tour operator, expressed its dismay at the crash, telling SRF that its thoughts were with all those affected and their families.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation. Police have not publicly speculated on what led the coach to leave the roadway inside the construction zone.
