Feds Raid Ilhan Omar’s D.C. Home as Congresswoman Blames ‘Political Intimidation’

Feds Raid Ilhan Omar's D.C. Home as Congresswoman Blames 'Political Intimidation'

Homeland Security Investigations agents executed a court-authorized search warrant at Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Washington, D.C., residence early Monday morning, according to the Justice Department, prompting the Minnesota Democrat to accuse the Trump administration of targeting her for political reasons.

Omar addressed the raid in a post on X, writing: “I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation.”

The congresswoman did not provide further details about the search or its scope in her statement.

Investigation Centers on Decades-Old Immigration Documents

The probe reportedly concerns immigration paperwork completed by Omar’s late father when she was a child, according to Fox News. The Justice Department confirmed that HSI—a branch of Immigration and Customs Enforcement—carried out the search under judicial authorization but declined to elaborate on the nature of the investigation.

Omar arrived in the United States in 1995 as a child refugee from Somalia, which was then engulfed in civil war. She became a naturalized American citizen in 2000.

The raid follows revelations last month that ICE had opened a separate investigation into allegations that Omar married her brother in order to commit immigration fraud. White House border czar Tom Homan confirmed that inquiry during a media appearance, saying authorities would pursue the matter regardless of Omar’s position in Congress.

“I mean, if someone committed [an] immigration violation and someone committed marriage fraud or anything like that, regardless if they’re a congresswoman or not, no one’s above the law, so I’ll leave it at that,” Homan said. “We’ll let HSI, Homeland Security Investigations, continue the investigation.”

Omar married Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, a British citizen, in 2009. Some critics have alleged that Elmi is her biological brother, a claim Omar has denied. The couple reportedly separated in 2011 and finalized a divorce in 2017.

A Long History of Conflict With Trump

The raid marks a significant escalation in the long-running feud between Omar and President Donald Trump. Omar, first elected in 2018, has been a frequent target of Republican criticism and was among the progressive lawmakers Trump has clashed with since his first term in office.

In her X post, Omar framed Monday’s search as part of a broader pattern, saying Trump has spent a decade leveling what she described as baseless accusations against her. The Trump administration has not publicly commented on Omar’s characterization of the raid, and it remains unclear what specific evidence or allegations prompted the search warrant.

HSI’s involvement signals that the investigation falls under the Department of Homeland Security’s immigration enforcement apparatus rather than a traditional criminal inquiry run by the FBI or another agency. Court-authorized search warrants require a judge to find probable cause, though the underlying affidavit in this case has not been unsealed.

The raid on a sitting congresswoman’s home is a rare occurrence in modern American politics, and it drew immediate attention from both supporters and critics of the administration. Omar’s allies in Congress had not issued coordinated statements as of Monday afternoon, and it was not clear whether she planned to hold a press conference or take other action in response.

Omar has represented Minnesota’s Fifth Congressional District, which includes Minneapolis, since 2019. She is one of the first Muslim women elected to Congress and has been a vocal critic of the administration’s immigration policies.
