Prosecutors in Michigan have authorized felony charges against a University of Michigan student accused of violently attacking a conservative commentator during a campus free speech event, according to reports. The incident, captured on video, shows the student launching herself at Liz Benichou, a Jewish conservative influencer, before being arrested by police.
The Confrontation
The altercation occurred Sunday during an event where Benichou and others were engaging with students about free speech and cultural issues. Video footage shows Temulun Togochog, the accused student, shouting at participants before physically assaulting Benichou. Witnesses reported Togochog yelling, “I should have fucking killed you while I had the fucking chance!” as officers detained her.
Charges Filed
The Washtenaw County Prosecutorâs Office confirmed that Togochog will face one count of assaulting, resisting, or obstructing an officer and two counts of assault or assault and battery. “We thoroughly reviewed the evidence submitted to us,” said Alyssa Fountain, an administrative assistant at the prosecutorâs office. A felony warrant is expected to be issued, with a court date to follow.
University Response
The University of Michigan condemned the violence in a statement, emphasizing its commitment to free speech and campus safety. “Physical violence has no place on our campus,” the university said, though it declined to comment on specific disciplinary actions due to privacy laws.
The case has reignited debates over free speech, political tensions on college campuses, and the limits of protest. Benichou, known for her conservative commentary, has previously engaged in discussions about cultural and religious issues, which appear to have sparked the confrontation.
