Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) has once again drawn a hard line against the far-left wing of his party, this time taking direct aim at the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), which he described as “deeply anti-American” and intent on policies that would “impoverish middle class” white people.
During an interview on Fox News with Sean Hannity, the Pennsylvania Democrat was asked whether he agreed with any part of the DSA’s agenda—which Hannity outlined as including eliminating the Senate, granting amnesty to illegal aliens, and abolishing both U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and prisons.
“Of course not. Like, the DSA, they’re deeply anti-American,” Fetterman said. “They’re deeply anti-capitalism. They’re deeply anti-the American way of life.”
Fetterman went on to argue that the people who actually make up the DSA are not the working-class advocates they claim to be, pointing out that many live in homes purchased by their parents for millions of dollars. He accused the group of wanting to “impoverish middle class whites, and seize all the production.”
“I would think every single Democrat should condemn the DSA,” Fetterman continued. “This is not like a big tent situation, they should have their own entire party, and run alone as the kinds of communists, and socialists, and anti-American party that they are.”
The comments mark the latest escalation in Fetterman’s public criticism of socialist and communist influences within the Democratic Party. According to Breitbart News’s Katherine Hamilton, Fetterman has previously condemned that influence, and during an appearance at the Israel on Campus Coalition conference in Washington, DC, he told Fox News Digital that identifying “with a communist who praises Mao and Cuba and for these places, that should be foreign to any Democrat.”
Party Direction ‘Troubling’
At that same event, Fetterman said the direction of his party had become “troubling,” and he pointed to Tuesday’s primaries as a test of whether Democrats would continue to cater to the far left. Establishment-backed candidates saw several wins that night, including Rep. Wesley Bell defeating socialist-supported Rep. Cori Bush in Missouri.
Fetterman has also cited polling data suggesting a broader shift in Democratic attitudes toward socialism. A CBS News/YouGov survey conducted in August, which polled 2,287 U.S. adults, found that 58 percent of Democrats hold a positive view of socialism, while only 32 percent view capitalism positively.
“The Democratic Party is becoming the party of socialism,” Fetterman wrote on X at the time, adding that “58 percent view socialism positively” and “50 percent view capitalism negatively.”
The senator’s remarks are likely to intensify the ongoing clash between the party’s moderate and progressive factions, a debate that has played out in primary races across the country and could shape the Democratic agenda heading into the next election cycle.
