Grammy-winning singer Gladys Knight, known to millions as the âEmpress of Soul,â is stepping back from the relentless pace of performing. In a social media post Thursday, the 82-year-old said she will be âeasing into fewer performancesâ to focus on other projects and spend more time with family, according to UPI.
âAfter much soul searching Iâve decided that I will be easing into fewer performances while focusing on transitioning into the next stage of my career and life moving forward,â Knight wrote. âIâll be spending more time on projects with my husband and visiting with my grandbabies and am looking forward to this new era.â
The announcement comes amid mounting public concern over the singerâs well-being, particularly after a July 25 concert at the Hollywood Bowl where she appeared to stop singing and look disoriented. Footage from that performance circulated widely online, prompting fans and family members to voice alarm about her health and demanding schedule.
Her husband and manager, William McDowell, addressed the concerns this week in comments to TMZ, offering a guarded but affectionate defense. âNo one is ever gonna make me say, âMy wife is well,â but all she wants to do is sing,â McDowell said.
The tension between Knightâs desire to perform and the toll it takes on her body is not new. In 2025, her son Shanga Hankerson told People that he considered the singerâs touring schedule âdetrimentalâ to her health and largely at McDowellâs urging. Knight refuted those claims at the time, insisting she was in control of her own career.
Thursdayâs announcement, however, suggests a shift. While Knight did not explicitly cite health concerns, the timing â coming weeks after the Hollywood Bowl video â implies that the decision is at least partly responsive to the scrutiny.
In her post, Knight struck a grateful tone, thanking fans for supporting her âevery step of the way.â She wrote: âI am immensely grateful to all of you and send my eternal love back to you. I hope to see your smiling faces out and about and on the road. God bless all of you and hope to see you soon.â
Knightâs career spans more than six decades, from her early days with the Pips to a string of soul and R&B classics like âMidnight Train to Georgia,â âNeither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye),â and âI Heard It Through the Grapevine.â
Beyond her music, she has been a presence in film, television, and Broadway â notably starring in the musical âPorgy and Bessâ and performing the theme song for the James Bond film âLicence to Kill.â
The news has sparked an outpouring of support from fans and fellow artists, many of whom have taken to social media to wish Knight well and express gratitude for her decades of artistry. Some have also urged respect for her privacy during this transition.
As Knight steps back from the road, the question of what âfewer performancesâ means remains open. It is unclear whether she will continue with occasional special appearances or if this marks the beginning of a full retirement from touring. What is clear, according to her own words, is that she is looking forward to spending time with her husband and grandchildren â a sentiment that resonates with many of her fans who have followed her for years.
For now, Knightâs legacy is secure, and her decision to ease off the throttle is being met with understanding, even from those who hoped to see her on stage again. As she herself put it, she hopes to see fans âout and about and on the roadâ â suggesting that this may not be a final goodbye, but rather a graceful transition into a new chapter.
