Homan Rejects Claims Yiannopoulos Got Fast-Track Deportation

Trump border czar Tom Homan pushed back Sunday against suggestions that Milo Yiannopoulos was given special treatment when immigration authorities deported him just one day after his arrest, saying the rapid removal is part of a broader push to speed up deportations and cut detention costs.

Appearing on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Homan responded to host Dana Bash’s questions about the timeline of Yiannopoulos’s arrest and removal, which has drawn scrutiny because of the unusually quick turnaround between the ICE apprehension and the deportation flight.

Homan: Yiannopoulos Overstayed Visa, Skipped Court

Homan said that, based on a Department of Homeland Security press release, Yiannopoulos overstayed his visa — likely a visitor visa, though Homan said he was not certain of the exact type. He added that Yiannopoulos had been ordered to appear in immigration court, failed to show up, and was subsequently ordered deported by a federal judge.

“Once ICE gets an order of deportation from a federal judge, their job is to execute that order, and that’s what they did,” Homan said. “He had his due process, ordered removed by a federal judge, and ICE removed him. It’s that simple.”

Yiannopoulos, a far-right commentator and former Breitbart editor, was arrested by ICE on a Thursday and deported the following day, according to DHS. That swift timeline prompted questions about whether he was allowed to leave quickly to avoid spending time in an ICE detention facility, as some critics have suggested.

Denies Preferential Treatment

Bash pressed Homan on whether Yiannopoulos received preferential treatment, given that many undocumented immigrants spend weeks or months in detention before removal. Homan flatly denied the suggestion, attributing the speedy deportation to ongoing efforts to streamline the removal process.

“No, we have been working steadily the last few months on getting people out quicker, that way to save the taxpayers money in detention space,” Homan said. “The quicker once a judge orders them out, rather than being in detention, waiting for travel documents and flight arrangements, we — ICE, along with the CBP and Department of Homeland Security, working really good on the efficiencies of the removal process. Get them out quick, open those beds up for more detainees to be held.”

Homan emphasized that the goal is to reduce the average length of stay in detention, saying that ICE aims to execute removal orders as soon as possible once they are issued.

“We track the average length of stay, and we want to get the average length of stay in detention down,” he said. “We want to execute those orders as soon as we can get them.”

The exchange highlights ongoing questions about how the Trump administration handles high-profile deportation cases, especially those involving public figures with large followings. Critics have accused the administration of selectively applying immigration laws, while officials insist that all removals are carried out according to legal procedures.

Bash noted that “there is a lot we don’t know here,” and asked Homan about the visa type and whether Yiannopoulos had sought to extend it. Homan said he was not certain of the visa category but reiterated that Yiannopoulos had overstayed and failed to appear in court.
