Musk’s story is a classic American dream narrative. He came from South Africa, built PayPal, made Tesla a household name, and pushed SpaceX to the edge of space. He became the richest person in the world by selling products people wanted. For years, the left celebrated him as proof that capitalism could solve climate change and push boundaries.
Then came the pivot. It wasn’t that Musk stopped building things. Tesla still sells cars. SpaceX still launches. But Musk bought Twitter—now X—for $44 billion, took it out of the left’s grip, and began reshaping the platform. He reinstated Donald Trump’s account, laid off half the workforce, and spoke out against radical trans politics, which hit home because one of his children now claims to be his daughter and has appeared in fashion ads.
Then came the endorsement. In July 2024, after the assassination attempt on Trump, Musk backed the former president openly. He poured roughly $300 million into the Trump campaign through America PAC. After the election, Trump named him to head the Department of Governmental Efficiency (DOGE). Musk left his day job to cut federal waste, fraud, and abuse. By early 2025, DOGE was imposing mass layoffs and freezes across the government, and the left started calling him ‘co-president.’
The left’s fury grew as DOGE accessed government data to determine who should be fired. Longtime federal workers worried about their jobs and accused Musk of violating privacy. The left claimed X was once a free speech haven, but it wasn’t. They claimed bans were based on objective metrics, but that was never true. Musk’s takeover broke that illusion, and they haven’t forgiven him.
Musk wasn’t always on board with Trump’s agenda either. He opposed the One Big Beautiful Bill and campaigned against it. But that didn’t matter to the left. Their rule is simple: if you’re not openly part of the left, you’re worth hating.
If Musk had voted for Kamala Harris, he’d still be just an eccentric billionaire. But he voted for Trump, took over X, and became the embodiment of right-wing extremism in their eyes. The American dream, they say, is dead. But people like Musk are living proof that it isn’t. The left wants to throw that dream away.
