U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is preparing to shell out up to $2 million for robotic dogs as the agency leans harder into high-tech tools during President Donald Trump’s mass deportation campaign, according to a Department of Homeland Security funding document posted Thursday.

The document shows ICE could spend between $1 million and $2 million on Boston Dynamics’ ‘Spot’ robots — the quadruped machines known for their agility and sensor packages — along with related accessories. The purchase would add a new layer of remote reconnaissance to the agency’s operations, letting officers scope out dangerous or hard-to-reach areas without stepping into harm’s way.

The planned acquisition comes just weeks after DHS approved up to $20 million for ICE to buy electric shock gloves, which agents could use to subdue combative suspects during immigration enforcement actions. That spending spree reflects a broader push to equip frontline personnel with advanced gear as the administration accelerates deportation efforts.

Robots for Recon, Not Arrests

A senior DHS official told NBC News that the robots will not be used to make arrests. Instead, ICE’s procurement notice describes the machines as a remotely operated tool for ‘inspection, situational awareness, and hazard assessment’ in spots that could pose risks to human officers.

‘This capability helps improve officer safety, supports informed operational decision-making, and enhances DHS’s ability to respond to incidents involving dangerous, confined, unstable, or difficult-to-access areas,’ the notice states.

Boston Dynamics’ Spot robots come equipped with cameras and sensors that can detect a range of hazards — including gas, radiation, and vibrations. They can navigate rough terrain and, depending on how they’re configured, use an extendable arm to interact with objects, giving agents a way to gather intel or manipulate items from a safe distance.

Already in the Field

The robotic dogs aren’t new to law enforcement. Police departments in Los Angeles and New York have deployed Spot for various operations, and the U.S. Secret Service used the robots to help secure President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida back in 2024. Boston Dynamics, for its part, stresses that its robots are not designed as weapons. The company’s ethics policy says it will not authorize or partner with customers seeking to weaponize its robots or use them as autonomous targeting systems.

But the tech uptick comes as ICE agents face a surge in violence during the administration’s deportation push. DHS says assaults against ICE personnel have jumped by 1,300%, while vehicular attacks have soared by 3,300%. The robotic dogs could offer a buffer, letting agents inspect potentially volatile locations before sending a human inside.

No Firm Timeline Yet

The procurement document doesn’t set a concrete timeline for deployment, and the government’s market research process doesn’t guarantee ICE will ultimately buy the robots. Still, if the purchase goes through, agents could soon have access to a growing arsenal of specialized equipment designed to help them evaluate risky situations, protect themselves, and execute the administration’s immigration enforcement agenda.

The move signals how far the agency is willing to go to modernize its operations — and how central technology has become to the political and operational strategy around immigration enforcement under Trump.
