The Kennedy Center is closing its doors immediately, following a board vote to shut the building down over what Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick described as “completely unsafe conditions,” according to reporting by The Daily Wire.
President Donald Trump announced the decision Tuesday on Truth Social, saying the board agreed “almost unanimously” to close the building for safety reasons and to begin a reconstruction process. He framed the closure as the first step in a much larger renovation — one he said is contingent on the outcome of an ongoing legal fight over whether his name can be added to the institution.
Closing Comes as Court Blocks Name Change
“The closing will take place immediately, however, the Renovation and Reconstruction, which is a very large and complex job, cannot begin until such time as the D.C. Circuit rules on the Board’s approved name,” Trump posted. “If the ruling is a negative one, which it should not be, and is not overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court, the Reconstruction and the Renovation of The Kennedy Center will not take place.”
The announcement landed the same day that Judge Christopher Cooper, an Obama appointee, ruled that Trump’s name could not be added to the Kennedy Center without congressional approval. Trump said the Justice Department would appeal immediately and seek an expedited review.
“The attorneys from the DOJ will ask for an expedited appeal. In the meantime, 17 Million Dollars, raised by President Trump, has been put into The Kennedy Center account to keep it afloat,” Trump said.
Video Shows Ceiling Collapse
The safety concerns were thrust into public view a day earlier, when Lutnick shared video on Monday showing a portion of the center’s ceiling falling to the ground. In his post, the commerce secretary pointed to what he characterized as years of deferred maintenance.
“Failing roofing, collapsing concrete supports, and steel that is rotting have created completely unsafe conditions,” Lutnick said.
The structural problems are not new. The center has struggled with critical maintenance issues in recent years, including a dilapidated roof, and Trump has spent months pushing for major renovations to the building.
Financial Strains Drove the Decision
Money problems appear to have factored heavily into the board’s vote. Estimates presented to the center’s trustees ahead of the decision indicated the institution would be unable to make payroll and pay maintenance contracts within “a matter of weeks,” according to The Daily Wire’s reporting.
That projection left the board with little room to maneuver. Closing the building outright, rather than attempting piecemeal repairs, was presented as the path forward — though the timeline for any actual reconstruction remains uncertain and now hinges on the D.C. Circuit’s ruling on the name change.
The legal questions and the physical condition of the building have become intertwined in a way that leaves the Kennedy Center’s near-term future unusually unsettled. Even with the closure set to take effect right away, the renovation work that officials say is necessary cannot begin until the courts resolve whether the board’s approved name can stand.
Trump has argued the renovations are overdue and has positioned the funding he raised as a stopgap to keep the institution operating. The $17 million he referenced has been placed into the center’s account, according to his post.
What happens next depends largely on how quickly the appeals process moves. A ruling in the board’s favor would clear the way for reconstruction to proceed. A ruling against it — if it survives Supreme Court review — would, by Trump’s own account, leave the renovation and reconstruction of the Kennedy Center off the table entirely.
