BOSTON — New digital forensic testimony in the trial of Lindsay Clancy, the Massachusetts mother accused of strangling her three young children, is shedding light on her physiological state at the time of the killings — and it has sparked fierce debate online.
Ian Whiffin, a digital forensic specialist, testified Monday that Clancy’s Apple Watch recorded a heart rate of just 57 beats per minute at 5:23 p.m. on January 24, 2023, according to NBC Boston. Prosecutors’ digital timeline suggests the killings occurred between roughly 5:23 and 5:38 p.m., though the watch did not record a heart rate for the entire window.

A Telling Vital Sign?
The recording has been described as “chilling” by many on social media, with some arguing it indicates Clancy was methodical and planned in her actions, while others point to it as evidence supporting the defense’s claim that she was in a state of psychosis rather than a fit of rage.
Clancy, a former labor and delivery nurse, has pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree murder. She has not denied strangling her children — 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan — but her defense team is pursuing what is commonly known as an insanity defense, arguing she was not criminally responsible due to her mental state.

Search History Details Mental State
Whiffin also revealed searches from Clancy’s devices in the days leading up to the killings, according to NBC Boston. On January 12, 2023, a search was made for “how quickly does Wellbutrin work for depression.” Six days later, there was a search for “ketamine for suicidal ideation.” On January 19, searches were made for “symptoms of postpartum psychosis” and “psychosis symptoms.”
The timeline of these searches suggests Clancy was actively researching her own mental health struggles in the days before the tragedy. Her defense has pointed to a complex psychiatric history that included a laundry list of medications.

A Complex Medication History
Court records and medical reports indicate Clancy was prescribed or took more than a dozen psychiatric medications after the birth of her third child, including Zoloft, Ativan, Benadryl, trazodone, Prozac, Ambien, Remeron, Klonopin, Seroquel, Valium, and amitriptyline. Doctors frequently changed or adjusted her medications as her symptoms persisted through the fall and winter of 2022.
Several of these medications list potential side effects including agitation, insomnia, suicidal thoughts, confusion, and, in rare cases, hallucinations or psychotic symptoms.
The Killings and Aftermath
On the day of the killings, Clancy sent her then-husband Patrick Clancy to pick up takeout food and medication. While he was gone, prosecutors say she strangled the three children before attempting suicide by jumping from a second-story window after cutting both wrists. She was left paralyzed from the waist down.
The case has drawn national attention not only for the shocking nature of the crimes but also for the broader questions it raises about postpartum mental health treatment and the adequacy of psychiatric care.
The trial continues, with the Apple Watch data and digital evidence likely to play a critical role in the jury’s deliberations.
