LIV Golf Faces Collapse as $300 Million Funding Deal Collapses, Bankruptcy Looms

LIV Golf's future is in jeopardy after a key $300 million investment deal fell through, with the league now considering liquidation amid player defections and financial struggles.

LIV Golf Faces Collapse as $300 Million Funding Deal Collapses, Bankruptcy Looms

LIV Golf is on the brink of collapse after a $300 million funding deal collapsed, leaving the controversial league scrambling to avoid liquidation. The Financial Times reported that BC Partners Credit, the lending arm of investment firm BC Partners, withdrew from a financing agreement that was critical to a planned 2027 relaunch.

Funding Falls Through as Player Support Falters

The deal’s collapse came after LIV failed to secure enough player commitments for its proposed ‘LIV Golf 2.0’ reboot. The league, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September after Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund announced it would cease funding after 2026, needed a critical mass of golfers to sign on for the new venture. While Axios reported at least 30 players had shown interest, negotiations over financial terms stalled as deadlines approached.

Player Defections and Career Concerns

Several high-profile players have already abandoned the league. Jon Rahm, one of LIV’s biggest stars, reached a separation agreement in October, with his lawyer stating he would not participate in the relaunch. Sergio Garcia also departed, while Brooks Koepka returned to the PGA Tour earlier this year. Bryson DeChambeau remains one of the few marquee names still attached, though his future is uncertain.

European players faced additional hurdles, as the DP World Tour warned that joining LIV would make them ineligible for membership—effectively barring them from events like the Ryder Cup.

Failed Relaunch Plan

The proposed LIV Golf 2.0 aimed to retain the team format while offering players equity stakes and expanding the schedule to at least 10 tournaments, half of which would be held outside the U.S. But without sufficient player buy-in and funding, the league now faces potential dissolution. The news sparked mockery on social media, with critics questioning LIV’s long-term viability and whether its players could return to traditional tours.
