Merrin Claims Ohio’s 9th Is GOP’s ‘Best Opportunity’ in the Nation to Unseat Marcy Kaptur

Republican challenger Derek Merrin says redistricting has turned Ohio's 9th District into the party's top pickup chance, arguing Rep. Marcy Kaptur has never faced a district like this one.

Merrin Claims Ohio's 9th Is GOP's 'Best Opportunity' in the Nation to Unseat Marcy Kaptur

Republican congressional candidate Derek Merrin is framing his race against longtime Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur as the GOP’s single best chance to knock off a sitting Democrat anywhere in the country, telling Breitbart News Daily that newly drawn district lines have fundamentally changed the political terrain in Ohio’s 9th Congressional District.

“This is the best opportunity we have in the nation to defeat an incumbent Democrat,” Merrin said during the interview with host Mike Slater. He argued that Kaptur, who has represented the region for more than four decades, has spent her tenure expanding the federal government and has never confronted a constituency as favorable to Republicans as the one she now faces.

A redrawn map and a Trump-won district

Central to Merrin’s confidence is the redistricting process that reshaped the seat. He noted that the newly configured district is one President Trump carried by ten percentage points in the last election cycle — a margin that would ordinarily make a Democratic incumbent vulnerable, if not doomed.

“She’s never had to run in a Republican district like this, so we have a great opportunity to flip this seat and help the Republicans hold the House,” Merrin said.

The freshman challenger’s closing argument against Kaptur leaned heavily on a litany of grievances aimed at her record, accusing her of consistently favoring bigger government, tighter regulations, higher taxes, and what he characterized as misplaced priorities on immigration. He said voters in the district are ready to hold her accountable in November.

Merrin acknowledges the incumbent’s advantages

For all his optimism, Merrin conceded that running against a long-tenured incumbent carries real disadvantages. Career politicians, he said, typically enter races with substantially more money and far greater name recognition than their challengers — advantages that Kaptur, one of the longest-serving members of Congress, would be expected to enjoy.

Even so, Merrin insisted his campaign holds the momentum. He pointed to internal polling that he said shows him ahead by roughly a couple of points if the election were held at the time of the interview, and he claimed to be winning what he described as the media battle through a heavier television advertising presence and a message he believes is breaking through to voters.

He also said his own name identification in the district has risen, helping to close the gap against a lawmaker whose name has been on the ballot there for generations.

An appeal to voters tired of both parties

Merrin described an electorate that is frustrated with the political establishment broadly — not just with Democrats. He said voters are weary of special interests and want practical solutions rather than party-line posturing, while still singling out Kaptur as out of step with the district’s priorities.

“They want real solutions, and they’re tired of the special interests, and they’re tired of a liberal that cares more about illegal immigrants than the American people,” he said.

The race is one of a handful of districts national Republicans are eyeing as they work to protect and expand their House majority. A newly drawn seat that Trump won by double digits, combined with an incumbent who has never campaigned in a district quite like it, has made Ohio’s 9th a focal point for GOP hopes of gaining ground in the chamber.

Whether Merrin’s internal polling reflects the broader reality of the race will only become clear as the campaign moves toward November. Kaptur’s campaign has not yet responded publicly to his remarks in the interview.
