Milo Yiannopoulos, the British-born right-wing provocateur and former Breitbart editor, may be permanently barred from re-entering the United States following his arrest and expected deportation, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
In a statement posted after his arrest, DHS warned that illegal aliens who decline to voluntarily leave the country through the CBP Home App could face removal “without a chance to return” — a warning that appeared to apply directly to Yiannopoulos, though DHS did not name him explicitly in that portion of the post.
“Being in detention is a choice. We encourage all illegal aliens to take control of their departure with the CBP Home App. The United States is offering illegal aliens $3,000 and a free flight to self-deport now,” DHS said. “We encourage every person here illegally to take advantage of this offer and reserve the chance to come back to the U.S. the right legal way to live the American dream. If not, you will be arrested and deported without a chance to return.”
The warning underscored the stakes for Yiannopoulos, who was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport in Louisiana on August 27, according to DHS. Officials said he will remain in ICE custody until he is removed from the country.
Overstayed Welcome
Yiannopoulos, a British national, entered the United States legally through New York City on May 14, 2019, DHS said. But he remained in the country beyond the period he was allowed to stay — a violation that DHS characterized bluntly.
“He chose to overstay his welcome in violation of our nation’s laws,” DHS said.
An immigration judge had already issued a final removal order for Yiannopoulos on July 22 after he failed to appear for an immigration hearing, according to DHS. That order set the stage for his arrest and pending deportation.
Although DHS did not explicitly state that Yiannopoulos would be permanently barred from the U.S., the agency’s broader warning — that those who do not self-deport risk being “deported without a chance to return” — suggested he may have forfeited the opportunity to come back legally in the future.
From Breitbart to Banishment
Yiannopoulos, who rose to prominence as a firebrand figure in the alt-right and conservative media circles, left Breitbart News in February 2017. His departure followed a controversy over comments he made about pedophilia, which led to widespread condemnation and the cancellation of a book deal.
He had been living in the U.S. for years, often as a fixture on the conservative speaking circuit and at right-wing events. His legal status in the U.S. had been a subject of speculation for some time, but the details of his immigration case were not widely known until DHS announced the arrest.
The case highlights the aggressive enforcement posture of the current administration, which has made deportation of undocumented immigrants a central priority. The CBP Home App, touted by DHS officials, is part of an effort to encourage voluntary departure, offering financial incentives and a free flight for those who leave on their own.
The offer, however, comes with a warning: those who refuse and are later arrested face harsher consequences, including the possibility of never being allowed back into the country.
For Yiannopoulos, that warning may now be a reality. Having already been arrested and ordered removed, he faces deportation without the chance to return through legal channels, according to the DHS statement.
Neither Yiannopoulos nor his representatives have publicly commented on the arrest or the potential permanent ban as of this writing.
