The United States Navy has pulled the wraps off a new air-to-air missile designed to take out enemy aircraft long before they pose a threat, according to a service announcement. Dubbed the AIM-424 Long Range Air-to-Air Missile (LRAAM), the weapon is currently in development with defense contractor Raytheon.
The missile boasts an effective range of more than 250 nautical miles—roughly 288 miles. To put that in perspective, that’s farther than the distance between London and Paris or New York and Boston, meaning American pilots could engage adversaries from a safe distance without ever entering the fight.
Meet ‘Malice’
Nicknamed Malice, the missile weighs in at 1,500 pounds and measures 13.5 feet long—significantly larger than traditional air-to-air missiles. The size is necessary to accommodate the larger propulsion system required to carry it across such extended distances.
Its warhead is a blast-fragmentation type, featuring a high-explosive core that ignites to create a pressurized gas blast, propelling the weapon’s fragmented metal casing outward at supersonic speeds. Air-to-air missiles typically use Annular Blast Fragmentation (ABF), which expels metal fragments in a 360-degree pattern upon detonation. The well-known Sidewinder missile, used to shred the fuselages of enemy aircraft, is a classic example of that approach.
Unlike precision-guided munitions that require a direct hit, blast-fragmentation warheads don’t need to be as exact. An indirect strike, combined with the omnidirectional blast, is often enough to destroy the intended target.
Strategic Advantage
According to the Navy’s release, Malice is designed to “strengthen fleet defense and maintain a decisive air domain overmatch against advanced threats.” The service says it “directly supports the Department’s contribution to integrated deterrence by increasing range, lethality, and combat effectiveness for Marine and Naval aviation forces that are defending our fleets, our interests, and our homeland.”
The missile also “sustains the Department’s first look, first shot, first kill advantage by providing our aviators greater reach, greater survivability, and greater tactical flexibility in the air-to-air fight,” the Navy added.
Laser Complement
The announcement comes on the heels of other emerging military technologies, including laser weapons designed to neutralize low-cost enemy drones without depleting expensive kinetic munitions. The Enduring High Energy Laser (E-HEL) aims to avoid a scenario that Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA) once likened to “throwing Ferraris at frisbees.”
These developments highlight the Pentagon’s push to maintain superiority in the air domain, blending long-range firepower with directed-energy systems to counter evolving threats at a reasonable cost.
