Neguse Accuses Trump of Trying to ‘Subvert a Free and Fair Election’

Rep. Joe Neguse (D-CO) on Monday accused President Donald Trump of attempting to “subvert a free and fair election” by sowing doubt about mail-in voting, according to an appearance on MSNBC’s “The 11th Hour.”

Neguse, a Democrat who represents parts of western and northern Colorado, argued that Trump’s recent attacks on mail balloting are not grounded in concerns about electoral integrity but rather are part of a broader strategy to depress participation and set the stage for contesting results.

“In my view, behind Donald Trump’s efforts to subvert a free and fair election is to also create chaos and doubt about the mail ballots system,” Neguse said.

He pointed to his home state as a counterexample, describing Colorado’s vote-by-mail process as a “gold standard system” that has been in place for more than a decade. The vast majority of Coloradans he represents—spanning rural, suburban, and western parts of the state—vote by mail, he said, calling it a “tried and true system.”

“Clearly Donald Trump would like to create enough fear and consternation amongst the broader electorate so that less people participate at the end of the day,” Neguse added, while expressing confidence that the mail balloting system would be “vindicated by the court.”

Neguse’s remarks come amid a heated national debate over mail-in voting, with Trump and some Republicans raising concerns about potential fraud and logistical problems. Democrats and voting-rights advocates have pushed back, arguing that mail voting is secure and that efforts to restrict or cast doubt on it amount to voter suppression.

“This is about ultimately creating enough doubt so that they can leverage that doubt for particular electoral gains down the stretch,” Neguse said. “The empirical data makes this clear. We can dispense with the logical arguments they are making about fraud. This has nothing to do with fraud.”

The Colorado congressman’s comments echo a broader Democratic messaging effort as the November election approaches, with party leaders increasingly framing Trump’s criticisms of mail voting as an attempt to undermine faith in the electoral process.
