Trump Floats Renaming Lake Ontario ‘Lake America’ Amid Canada Trade War

President Donald Trump says the U.S. is 'giving serious consideration' to renaming Lake Ontario as 'Lake America,' citing dwindling business with the province, as cross-border trade tensions escalate.

Trump Floats Renaming Lake Ontario 'Lake America' Amid Canada Trade War

President Donald Trump has floated renaming Lake Ontario to “Lake America,” a move that would echo his earlier decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico, as the trade war between the United States and Canada continues to intensify.

In a post on Truth Social Tuesday morning, Trump wrote that the United States is “giving serious consideration” to the name change, citing the evolving economic relationship with the province. “In that we don’t expect to doing much business with Ontario any longer,” he added, thanking readers for their attention to the matter.

The proposal marks the latest rhetorical salvo in a cross-border dispute that shows no signs of cooling. According to Breitbart News, Trump announced Monday that he would raise tariffs on Canadian automobiles and auto parts from 25 percent to 50 percent effective January 1. The hike targets cars, trucks, and components, and follows the collapse of U.S.-Canada trade talks late last week.

Both sides have blamed each other for the breakdown, with each accusing the other of making unreasonable last-minute demands. The collapse has left the two nations locked in a trade conflict that has already weathered months of tit-for-tat tariffs and diplomatic friction.

Ontario, Canada’s most populous province, is home to the country’s auto industry, making it a central player in the dispute. The proposed renaming appears to be a direct reference to the province’s economic significance and the administration’s frustration with trade negotiations.

The move also harkens back to Trump’s executive order last year that officially renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, a change that drew both support and criticism. Should the Lake Ontario renaming proceed, it would require federal action and could face legal and diplomatic challenges, though the president did not outline a timeline or specific process in his social media post.

Trade experts note that the renaming, while largely symbolic, reflects the deteriorating relationship between the two longtime allies. The auto tariff hike, if implemented, would have significant economic implications for both countries, potentially raising vehicle prices and disrupting supply chains that are deeply integrated across the border.

Canadian officials have not yet responded publicly to Trump’s latest suggestion, but the country has previously signaled it would retaliate against U.S. tariffs. The situation remains fluid as the January 1 deadline approaches and both sides assess their next steps.
