At least 95 people are confirmed dead and hundreds more are missing after a massive flash flood tore through northern Nepal, sweeping away buildings, bridges, and people in a surge of mud and debris that witnesses described as apocalyptic. The disaster struck Wednesday along the Himalayan border between Nepal and China-controlled Tibet, where a wall of water estimated at 8 to 10 meters high—roughly 26 to 33 feet—descended from the mountains and demolished everything in its path. Video footage circulating online shows terrified residents sprinting for higher ground as a brown torrent obliterates a border crossing structure in seconds.
Glacier Landslide Likely Trigger
Initial investigations point to a glacier landslide as the most probable cause. The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) recorded a 4.4-magnitude earthquake approximately seven minutes before CCTV footage captured mud and water destroying buildings in Gyirong, a town on the Tibetan side of the border. Nepal’s foreign minister, Shisir Khanal, told parliament Wednesday that an avalanche triggered by the quake may have unleashed the flood.
Qianggong Zhang, a scientist at the Kathmandu-based International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, suggested an ice-rock avalanche in the Lhende Khola river on the Nepali side was the trigger. He also warned that a blockage remains lodged upstream on the Nepal-China border river, raising the prospect of a second flood. “With a blockage still lodged upstream… authorities warn a second flood may occur,” Zhang said, urging vigilance.
Sky News reported the death toll at 95, with over 300 tourists unaccounted for. The mudslide is believed to have been caused by a wall of mud and rock that collapsed into a river, resulting in catastrophic flooding on the Nepali side.

Dramatic footage from near Trishuli Bazar, a town northeast of Kathmandu, shows a sudden flash flood of muddy water racing through the valley, swallowing houses and a bridge in seconds. Another clip from Timure in the Rasuwa district captures the moment the flood hit at 8:45 a.m. local time, with residents scrambling for safety.
Experts fear the toll could rise as rescue teams reach isolated areas. The German Research Centre for Geosciences noted the quake’s proximity to the disaster zone, while the international community has begun to respond. The U.S. State Department has not yet publicly confirmed the status of the missing American citizens, but diplomatic sources indicate they are working with Nepali authorities.
