Nick Fuentes Tells Ohio Voters to Back Democrat Amy Acton, Calling Race a Must-Win Against Ramaswamy

The white nationalist streamer made an all-caps pitch for the Democratic nominee as early voting gets underway, drawing swift condemnation from Republicans and a shrug from analysts.

Nick Fuentes Tells Ohio Voters to Back Democrat Amy Acton, Calling Race a Must-Win Against Ramaswamy

White nationalist streamer Nick Fuentes urged Ohio voters to cast ballots for Democrat Amy Acton for governor, issuing an all-caps appeal on X as early voting continues across the state, Breitbart reported.

“Early voting has begun in Ohio. VOTE AMY ACTON FOR GOVERNOR,” Fuentes wrote, according to the outlet, offering the Democrat his support without conditions. The post came days after in-person early voting opened in Ohio on Tuesday.

The message marked an escalation of a stance Fuentes first laid out months earlier, when he told his audience he had effectively become a Democratic voter out of necessity. “We’re gonna have to hold our noses and we’re gonna have to vote Democrat,” he said at the time, per the Western Journal, which reported that he described himself as a “non-woke moderate Democrat” and called for President Donald Trump’s impeachment.

A race Fuentes says he cares about

Fuentes, who is from Illinois, has framed his hostility toward Republican nominee Vivek Ramaswamy around the candidate’s background. The 27-year-old commentator said Ramaswamy β€” born in Cincinnati to Indian immigrant parents β€” “cannot become the governor of Ohio,” according to the New York Post.

The Ohio contest appears to be the only race Fuentes has said he cares about. Fox News reported that during a livestream he declared, “We have to deny Vivek Ramaswamy the governorship,” a statement that followed Ramaswamy calling him out by name at Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest.

Ramaswamy has not let the criticism pass unanswered. He condemned Fuentes in a New York Times op-ed, and Vice President JD Vance weighed in as well, saying that anyone who attacks his wife, Usha, “can eat s***,” according to Breitbart. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) called Fuentes’s rhetoric “blatantly antisemitic, racist and anti-American.”

The condemnations reflect a broader effort by Republicans to put distance between themselves and the streamer as the Ohio race tightens. Ramaswamy won the Republican primary in May with what Trump described as his “complete and total endorsement,” and forecasters rate the general election as competitive.

Analysts skeptical of any real impact

Despite the attention the endorsement has drawn, political observers are doubtful it will move many votes. Dominik Stecula, a political science professor at Ohio State University, told NBC4 that far-right support for Acton is unlikely to sway the electorate, describing Fuentes as “still a relatively fringe figure.”

Acton is a familiar name to Ohio voters from her tenure as the state’s health director during the COVID-19 pandemic. She ran unopposed for the Democratic nomination in a state that has not elected a Democrat as governor in roughly two decades β€” a drought that makes the race an uphill climb for her party even with an unusual constellation of outside voices backing her candidacy.

For Ramaswamy, the endorsement of his opponent by a figure he has already publicly denounced adds another wrinkle to a campaign that has drawn national scrutiny. The primary win gave him Trump’s backing, but the general election presents a different map and a different set of arguments, with Democrats hoping that discontent among some corners of the right β€” however marginal β€” translates into at least a few defections at the margins.

Whether Fuentes’s followers in Ohio actually heed his instruction is an open question. Early voting is already underway, and the streamer’s audience, while vocal online, is not generally viewed as a decisive bloc in statewide contests. Stecula’s assessment suggests the endorsement is more likely to generate headlines than ballots.

Still, the episode illustrates how the Ohio governor’s race has become a magnet for national political figures and causes on both sides. With the election rated as competitive and control of a major swing-state governorship at stake, both campaigns are likely to keep drawing outside attention β€” welcome or not β€” through Election Day.
