A 19-year-old UMass Dartmouth student who entered the country legally on a tourist visa more than a decade ago and was later shielded from deportation is now facing a murder charge in connection with the fatal stabbing of a college football player outside a Rhode Island nightclub, according to Fox News and local police accounts.
Chukwunonso David Uzoma-Eze, a Nigerian national, is accused of stabbing two UMass Dartmouth football players early Saturday morning near a Providence nightclub, WPRI reported. Both victims were transported to a hospital, where Marvins Antoine, 18, died of his injuries.
What Authorities Say Happened
The stabbing occurred in a Wendy’s parking lot across the street from Mezzo Lounge, Providence police said, following an altercation that started in the line outside the club. Authorities later arrested Uzoma-Eze, who is also enrolled at UMass Dartmouth, on the school’s campus, according to WPRI.
Uzoma-Eze now faces a murder charge. Federal law enforcement sources told Fox News that if he is convicted, he would lose any protections against deportation.
Immigration History Draws Scrutiny
According to Fox News, which cited federal law enforcement sources, Uzoma-Eze entered the United States legally in 2015 but overstayed his B-2 tourist visa. In September 2022, the Biden administration approved his request for deferred action, a discretionary mechanism that delays deportation.
The outlet reported that Uzoma-Eze applied for a work permit in August 2023, but that request was denied the following month. He applied a second time for deferred action in February 2025 and a third time in October 2025, according to Fox News. The Trump administration granted the latter request on Oct. 8, 2025.
Also in February 2025, Uzoma-Eze applied again for a work permit tied to his deferred action status. That application remains pending, Fox News reported.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement has lodged a detainer with the Bristol County House of Correction. Uzoma-Eze was expected to be transferred to Rhode Island on Friday to face the murder charge.
Healey Declines to Answer Questions
Massachusetts Democratic Gov. Maura Healey walked away Friday when a reporter asked about Uzoma-Eze’s immigration status and whether state policies played any role in the stabbing.
“Are your policies to blame at all for this UMass Dartmouth stabbing by an illegal immigrant? Should you try to work with ICE?” the reporter asked as the governor rushed away.
The case has quickly become the latest flashpoint in the broader national debate over immigration enforcement, deferred action programs, and how federal and state authorities handle individuals who remain in the country after their legal status expires. Deferred action does not confer lawful immigration status on its recipients; it is instead a temporary reprieve from removal that can be granted, denied, or revoked at the discretion of federal officials.
It remains unclear what specifically prompted Uzoma-Eze’s repeated deferred action applications or what basis federal officials cited when granting and denying them across two administrations. Fox News reported that the approvals spanned both the Biden and Trump administrations, underscoring how such discretionary decisions can carry over from one presidency to the next regardless of broader policy shifts.
UMass Dartmouth has not publicly commented on the arrest, and it is not known whether the university was aware of Uzoma-Eze’s immigration status prior to the stabbing. Antoine’s death has shaken the campus community and the football program, where he was a student-athlete.
The investigation into the stabbing remains active, and Providence police have not released additional details about the altercation that preceded it. Uzoma-Eze is presumed innocent unless and until he is convicted.
The Bristol County House of Correction detainer means that even if Uzoma-Eze were to be released from state custody, ICE would be notified and could seek to take him into federal custody for immigration proceedings. His transfer to Rhode Island will allow him to appear before a court on the murder charge.
