A New Jersey Democratic congressional candidate who has built her campaign around cleaning up money in politics declined to answer a straightforward question about her own finances during a Sunday debate, according to Breitbart News. Rebecca Bennett, who is challenging incumbent Rep. Tom Kean Jr. (R-NJ), was asked three separate times by a moderator to state her net worth and did not provide a figure on any attempt.
The exchange began with a simple prompt: “What is your net worth?” Bennett replied that she didn’t know the exact number and pivoted to her signature issue. “I’m happy to follow up later, but I will say that ultimately, I think what I hear loud and clear from people is that we need to get money out of politics,” she said, calling the influence of money in politics “deeply corrosive” and drawing a line from the Citizens United decision to the country’s current political climate.
Bennett went on to promise she would work to end dark money, overturn Citizens United, and refuse corporate PAC contributions, framing her stance as a contrast to Kean. She accused the incumbent of having “traded over $3 million worth of stocks” and accepting hundreds of thousands in corporate PAC money.
The moderator tried again, asking for “just a number, rough estimate.” Bennett responded that her net worth is “very similar to what we see of a lot of families around here,” noting that she and her husband both work and have been “very fortunate” to build the life they want. A third attempt followed, with the moderator asking more broadly whether she is worth over a million dollars. Before Bennett could finish her answer, the audience erupted in laughter, per Breitbart’s account.
She continued by citing her personal story â attending college on an ROTC scholarship and using the GI Bill for her MBA â and said the race is ultimately about “the version of the country that we’re going to leave for my daughters and the next generation.”
Kean Fires Back on Stock Trading and Healthcare Career
Kean, for his part, disputed Bennett’s characterization of his financial activity during the same debate. “I have not traded an individual stock since I’ve been a member of Congress,” he said, adding that his holdings are reported every three months and that he has gone beyond what the ethics committee recommends by forgoing short selling and avoiding investments in companies based in countries hostile to the United States. He described his arrangement as a blind structure in which he has “no involvement and no input.”
The Republican incumbent has also raised questions about Bennett’s prior career in the healthcare industry. In a September 27 post on X, Kean wrote that Bennett, as a health care executive, “set up lucrative deals with companies that put profits over people.” He added that patients deserve leaders who prioritize their health and access to quality care rather than the bottom line.
The National Republican Congressional Committee amplified that line of attack. “Lying Democrat Rebecca Bennett talks a big game, but the second the spotlight turns to her, the act falls apart,” NRCC spokeswoman Maureen O’Toole told Breitbart News. “Bennett refuses to come clean about her own finances and shady career in the healthcare industry, while repeatedly lying about her opponent. Rebecca Bennett isn’t running for Congress to fight corruption; she’s running to take advantage of it.”
A Pattern of Policy Controversies
The net worth exchange is not the first time Bennett has faced scrutiny over her positions or her responses to pointed questions. Breitbart News reported in September that Bennett supports raising the federal minimum wage to $25 per hour through the Living Wage for All Act, which would gradually increase the federal minimum and phase out subminimum wages for tipped workers. An Employment Policies Institute study cited in that report estimated the proposal would eliminate roughly 5 million jobs nationwide over five years, including nearly 60,000 in New Jersey.
Bennett also opposed the One Big Beautiful Bill, which included provisions eliminating federal income taxes on qualifying tips and overtime and providing tax relief for seniors, arguing that the legislation delivered tax breaks to wealthy Americans.
Earlier reporting from Breitbart News in June noted that Bennett remained silent when asked whether people should stop attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump. During that exchange, a staffer held a sign in front of the person asking the question.
The race between Bennett and Kean is shaping up as one of the more closely watched House contests in New Jersey, with both candidates trading accusations over transparency, ethics, and whose record better serves working families. For Bennett, who has centered her pitch on removing money’s influence from Washington, the debate moment has handed Republicans a fresh line of attack: that she is unwilling to apply the same standard of disclosure to herself that she demands of her opponent.
