New York City Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani has sparked a political firestorm after announcing a giveaway of 2,000 free Broadway tickets to public high school students — with the announcement delivered in Mandarin.
The post, shared on social media in August 2026, was accompanied by a Mandarin-language message and a link to the ticket program. Critics were quick to note the irony of a U.S. mayor communicating in a foreign language just months after President Trump signed an executive order designating English as the official language of the United States.
“No need for the subtitles, Mr. Mayor,” wrote a columnist for The Daily Wire, which first reported on the post. “Maybe just get the kids a free Duolingo subscription instead. To each according to his needs.”
The giveaway itself — free Broadway seats donated by producers who, according to the report, already sell out to tourists — was framed by Mamdani as a way to make theater accessible to every New Yorker. But critics see it as something far more sinister: a calculated move in what they describe as the mayor’s “anti-American crusade.”
“These ‘free’ tickets … are just Mamdani’s latest chance to redistribute what he didn’t earn and call it ‘justice for the theater kids,’” the Daily Wire piece said. “Every New Yorker should be able to afford Broadway, he says. Should they? I didn’t realize a night at the theater was a constitutional right.”
Mamdani, a democratic socialist who took office as mayor of New York City, has made “free” programs a hallmark of his administration. But the Daily Wire report argues these initiatives come with steep price tags that taxpayers will ultimately bear.
The report cited figures for several Mamdani proposals: his “free buses” plan would cost the city $1.1 billion annually, and fares have reportedly gone up anyway; his “free childcare” plan is pegged at $6 billion, with outside estimates creeping toward $9 billion; and his “free housing” push is set to produce 180 “affordable” units at a cost of $22 billion — all while the average rent in the city hits a record $6,655 per month.
The mayor has also proposed a Delivery Protection Act that critics say would punish Amazon subcontractors and drive up delivery fees for consumers.
Marxist Roots and Alleged Ties to China
But the Broadway ticket controversy is about more than fiscal policy. The Daily Wire report connects Mamdani’s Mandarin-language post to what it describes as his deeper ideological commitments — and his ties to figures linked to the Chinese Communist Party.
At a 2021 Young Democratic Socialists of America conference, then-Assemblyman Mamdani spoke openly about the need for socialists to organize around less popular causes, including Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) — which the report describes as a campaign that “would love to see Israel wiped off the map” — and what he called “the end goal of seizing the means of production.”
His network, the report alleges, includes Neville Roy Singham, a Shanghai-based billionaire Marxist who has poured “hundreds of millions” into left-wing nonprofits that echo CCP talking points. Singham’s family has reportedly done campaign work for Mamdani, and Singham himself has invoked Mao and called Western capitalism “fascism,” pushing a “new world order” narrative that the report says erases America’s role in defeating fascism in World War II.
“Which is why a Marxist delivering a speech in Mandarin should unsettle you,” the Daily Wire columnist wrote. “China’s communist history is not abstract; it’s tangibly terrifying.”
The report cites the Great Leap Forward, the Cultural Revolution, and China’s continued one-party rule as reasons for concern when a U.S. mayor engages in Mandarin-language outreach.
A Pattern of Anti-American Rhetoric?
Mamdani, who was born in Uganda, has a history of provocative statements about the United States, according to the report. He released a video on America’s birthday slamming the nation as a “nation of contradictions,” filmed from behind George Washington’s desk. He published a “target list” of New York’s “100 worst landlords” and thousands of second-home owners. He has said the boots of the NYPD are “laced by the IDF.” His father wrote a book blaming 9/11 on the United States.
The report also notes that Mamdani has been photographed with an unindicted co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, and that families of 9/11 victims have said they don’t want him near this year’s 25th anniversary ceremony.
“He does not like it here,” the columnist wrote, “and he is trying to tear it down with a Marxist sandwich: promise something good, then say and do things that quietly wreck the place underneath it.”
Response and Reactions
Mamdani’s office did not respond to requests for comment. The mayor also posted the ticket announcement in Spanish, and he is reported to speak seven languages — a fact the Daily Wire columnist attributes to his privileged education at a $70,000-a-year progressive private school on the Upper West Side and a $50,000-plus liberal arts college in Maine.
For now, the Broadway giveaway moves forward, but the political fallout is just beginning.
