A New York Times games department executive was shot and killed Saturday afternoon in Dublin, California, and the parents of her wife have been arrested in connection with the death, according to reporting from Breitbart News, The New York Times, The Wrap, and the San Francisco Chronicle.
The victim was identified as Jonathan McKinsey, a woman living as a man, who worked as an executive in the Times’ games division. The shooting occurred just after 3 p.m. Saturday, The Wrap noted, citing local reporting.
McKinsey’s in-laws — Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 76, and the parents of McKinsey’s wife, Candice Jang — were arrested in connection with the killing, the Times reported.
Shooting unfolded near police headquarters
The San Francisco Chronicle reported that McKinsey was found wounded in the parking lot at Dublin Sports Grounds, a city park with sports fields and a playground that sits adjacent to Dublin’s police department and library. The location is a short distance from the police station, which the Chronicle noted in its description of the scene.
A Dublin resident, Assad Razawi, witnessed the incident, according to the Chronicle. The outlet reported that Razawi said he heard five or six gunshots and saw McKinsey drop to the ground in the parking lot.
Razawi also told the Chronicle that a man and a woman he believed were involved in the shooting walked calmly from the scene at a normal pace.
The investigation remained active, and authorities had not publicly detailed a motive as of the reporting.
Dueling restraining orders preceded the killing
Court records indicate a volatile family dispute in the months before the shooting. McKinsey and Jang had both filed for restraining orders against one another, according to the Times.
In December 2025, McKinsey filed for a restraining order accusing Jang and her parents of abuse, alleging the mistreatment was tied to her identity. McKinsey also claimed that Jang’s mother had called her and one of her sons perverts after the boy tried on dresses.
Earlier in 2025, Jang filed for a restraining order against McKinsey, claiming physical abuse and accusing McKinsey of emotionally abusing Jang’s mother, according to the Times.
The dueling filings reflect a conflict that had already been documented in the courts before Saturday’s violence.
Community and workplace in shock
McKinsey’s role at the New York Times placed her in the company’s games department, a division responsible for puzzles and related products. Neither the Times nor Dublin police had issued an extended public statement on the case at the time of the Chronicle’s and Times’ initial reports.
Dublin, a suburban city in Alameda County in the East Bay, is home to the sports complex where the shooting took place. The area includes youth sports fields and a library, making the Saturday afternoon incident visible to passersby.
As of the latest reporting, the two suspects — Zhang and Chen — remained in custody in connection with the death, and no additional information about their legal representation or potential charges had been made public.
Breitbart News’ coverage of the case was authored by AWR Hawkins, the outlet’s Second Amendment columnist and writer of its Down Range newsletter. Hawkins is a political analyst for Armed American Radio and holds a PhD in military history.
The shooting remains under investigation, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact Dublin police.
