The U.S. private sector added 86,000 jobs in October, according to payroll processor ADP, matching September’s revised figures and surpassing economists’ forecasts. The report signals steady hiring momentum despite economic headwinds.
Broad-Based Hiring Across Sectors
Trade, transportation, and utilities led gains with 39,000 new positions, while construction added 13,000 and education/health services grew by 28,000. Leisure and hospitality payrolls expanded by 19,000, while financial firms added 15,000 workers.
“Employers of all sizes were hiring last month,” said ADP economist Nela Richardson. “Job-changers were attracted by bonuses, overtime opportunities, and faster wage growth—earnings increases hit their highest pace since March 2024.”
Pockets of Weakness
Manufacturing shed 1,000 jobs, while mining/natural resources lost 8,000 positions. Professional and business services saw a sharp decline of 27,000 jobs. The information sector contracted by 2,000 roles.
Small Businesses Drive Growth
Companies with fewer than 50 employees added 28,000 workers, while mid-sized firms (50-499 employees) created 33,000 jobs. Large corporations contributed 24,000 new positions.
The stronger-than-expected report comes ahead of Friday’s more comprehensive government jobs data, which will include public-sector employment figures.
