Report: Michigan Islamic Groups That Urged Violence Received $47M in Taxpayer Funds

A bombshell report from the Middle East Forum (MEF) has uncovered that over 30 Islamic institutions in Michigan—where speakers allegedly called for violence against Jews, prayed for jihad, and labeled America “the house of Satan”—received nearly $50 million in taxpayer funds. The findings have ignited demands for congressional oversight and a review of federal grant vetting processes.

Extremist Rhetoric and Public Funding

MEF’s database, titled “Michigan’s Islamist Pulpits,” documents 928 inflammatory statements made at 36 Islamic institutions across the state, with 12 of them collectively receiving $47.3 million in federal, state, and local funding. The report includes video evidence of sermons where speakers referred to the U.S. as “the great Satan” and prayed for the death of Jews. One speaker at the Islamic Center of East Lansing was recorded saying, “O Allah, count them in number and kill them dispersed, and leave not one of them.”

Taxpayer Dollars at Work

The majority of the funding—over $40 million—came from the USDA via the Michigan Department of Education, allocated as school lunch funds to the Islamic Center of Detroit. Other sources included DHS, HHS, and local governments. CAIR-Michigan, which received $100,000 from Detroit and the state, hosted an event where a speaker discussed the permissibility of killing apostates under Islamic law, though he emphasized it must be state-sanctioned.

Political Ties and Backlash

The report also highlights connections to political figures, including Abdul El-Sayed, a former Michigan gubernatorial candidate whose father-in-law sits on CAIR-Michigan’s board. MEF’s executive director, Gregg Roman, called for an immediate halt to public funding, stating, “The First Amendment protects a sermon. It does not entitle anyone to a state honor or a federal grant.” The group is urging Congress and state officials to investigate how these institutions were approved for taxpayer money.
