Sheinbaum Defends AMLO’s Son After US Visa Revocation Over Fuel Allegations

Sheinbaum Defends AMLO's Son After US Visa Revocation Over Fuel Allegations

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has moved quickly to defend Andres Manuel Lopez Beltran, the son of her predecessor Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO), after the U.S. State Department revoked his tourist visa and Mexican media linked him to the illegal fuel trade. Speaking at a news conference, Sheinbaum insisted there is no evidence of wrongdoing and suggested the visa revocation was politically motivated.

Lopez Beltran’s visa revocation surfaced recently, drawing attention to his alleged involvement in the smuggling of illegal fuel, known in Mexico as huachacol. According to Breitbart Texas, Lopez Beltran has been the subject of multiple reports for his purported role in a network that moved fuel in and out of Mexico, reportedly involving top Mexican military and naval officials, as well as political figures.

Witness Statements and Cartel Links

This week, Mexican news outlets reported that Lopez Beltran was mentioned in two separate statements from cooperating witnesses in ongoing investigations related to cartel-connected fuel trade. Additionally, outlets including Latinus have reported that associates of Lopez Beltran have been recorded claiming close relationships with leaders of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

Despite these reports, Sheinbaum said Lopez Beltran is not under investigation in Mexico. The Attorney General’s Office also released a statement earlier this week confirming that no investigation is underway and that news articles tying him to the fuel trade were false, according to Breitbart Texas.

Pattern of Protection?

The government’s defense of Lopez Beltran mirrors how Sheinbaum and her administration handled Sinaloa Governor Ruben Rocha Moya earlier this year. In April, the U.S. Department of Justice announced a criminal indictment against Rocha Moya and nine of his political allies, charging them with drug conspiracy and weapons offenses for allegedly working with the Sinaloa Cartel. Instead of cooperating with U.S. requests for arrests or extraditions, Sheinbaum publicly claimed there was no evidence of wrongdoing by Rocha Moya. The governor remains in Mexico as a wanted fugitive and is reportedly receiving military protection.

Critics see a pattern of the Mexican government shielding those close to the previous administration, even as U.S. authorities and Mexican media point to connections with organized crime. The situation has raised questions about the independence of Mexico’s justice system and the willingness of the current government to cooperate with U.S. law enforcement.

For now, Sheinbaum’s administration maintains that Lopez Beltran is innocent of any charges, characterizing the visa revocation as unjust. But with witness statements and recorded conversations circulating, the allegations against the former president’s son show no signs of fading. The U.S. State Department has not provided a reason for the visa action, leaving room for continued speculation and political tension between the two countries.
