Hollywood powerhouses Shonda Rhimes and Damon Lindelof are joining forces to raise money for two Democratic Senate hopefuls, according to a new report. The event, set for September 10 in Los Angeles, will benefit Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff and Texas candidate James Talarico, with ticket prices ranging from $1,000 to $27,000.
Rhimes, the creator of ABC’s long-running medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, will host the fundraiser alongside Lindelof, co-creator of the hit series Lost, and his wife, Heidi Lindelof, as first reported by the New York Times.
A Bipartisan (Left-Leaning) Affair
While the event was initially planned solely for Talarico, Ossoff was added to the lineup recently. The proceeds are expected to be split evenly between the two candidates’ campaign coffers, adding to Ossoff’s already substantial $77.3 million and Talarico’s $68.6 million war chests, according to the Times.
The fundraiser’s lower-tier tickets have already sold out, an indication of strong enthusiasm among donors for both candidates, who are running on far-left platforms.
Rhimes & Lindelof: Activism in Hollywood
Both Rhimes and Lindelof are no strangers to political activism, often using their platforms to push progressive causes.
Rhimes, a prominent Democratic donor who previously backed Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, has a history of intertwining her television work with her personal politics. Earlier this year, she paused production on Grey’s Anatomy to protest the actions of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). She has also used her shows to advocate for abortion rights and joined the national board of Planned Parenthood in 2017.
In 2022, Rhimes made headlines when she deleted her Twitter account following Elon Musk’s acquisition of the platform, a move she framed as a statement against the changes Musk implemented.
Lindelof has been equally outspoken about his political views. Late last year, he threatened to leave ABC/Disney in protest over the brief suspension of late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, whom he publicly supported.
The fundraiser is expected to draw a crowd of wealthy donors from the entertainment industry, eager to support the two Senate candidates as they head into the upcoming elections.
Neither Rhimes, Lindelof, Ossoff, nor Talarico have publicly commented on the event, but the Times’ report highlights the growing trend of Hollywood figures lending their star power to political campaigns.
